I picked this up a few weeks ago, she is a 22' islander. The previous owner started a transom rebuild 10 years ago and it never got finished. She just sat in his garage. The interior is in excelent shape and there was only 1 problem... he sold the motor. So i am getting a bracket / swim platform welded on and (for the time being ) hanging my 90hp 3cyl merc off the back.

LB, welcome to iboats. That's a nice looking islander you have there. Are you sure about the model year?

That is alot of boat!! - Nice Trailer too - keep up with the progress - There is a Holiday 18 carcass near me - it was an I/O but what is left of the drive train is nothing but weight at this point - I have thought it would be a good project to get and make into a CC with an OB bracket on it. I have seen some OB brackets that seemed to have worked well and it sure would open up alot of room in the back - interested to see how it works - would need new cabling though!

The only year with that hull type and no side window in the cabin is the 67. We haven't been able to locate a 68 brochure so who knows. It's deff not an 80's model since it has the lapstrake hull. Also you can see it's been modified. That's a newer windshield and it lookls like the side lower rubrails are gone.

The bow rail also screams late '60's...

Re: 86 islander.

how well do you guys figure a 90 (prop rated) will push this big boat? I figure about the same since i am only losing a few hp while also losing almost 500lbs. What do you think?

You should be fine, just make sure your propped right. I'd want my motor to be in the upper max. Rpm range.

Yeah and those rails are probably add ons too. But the hull is basically exactly the same as mine. This model was a replacement for the discontinued Sunchief and except for the cabin vs runabout is almost identical so if you want to see how it all goes together check out my restore.

And an 86 Islander...
page6islander.jpg

Old style lapstrake, old style bow rail, old style no side cabin window. BUT, 86 pinstriping and decals, 86 windshield and cabin window, 86 hull color.

Here's my vote...

Old style hull built (or maybe even rebuilt) in the Starcraft factory back in 1986;):)

Hey, welcome to iboats and the Starcraft brotha hood!:D

Northbeach, i already went through your thread lol and just about every one else as well lol. Jasoutside, that's an intriguing idea. Hmmm. I never woulda thought that they would do something like that. What specific things should i take pics of to help nail down the year?

Re: 86 islander.

Tell ya what LB, I think I'm betting, all in actually, just based on the decals, windshield, paint color and the title, this is an 86.

Now, I also think this is an older hull though.

But like I mentioned, I really think this boat has been built, or maybe even rebuilt, at Starcraft in 86. Why do I think this? Mainly cuz any guy who is rebuilding a boat wouldn't go to that length to get the decals and windshields to match exactly like that.

Or, my theory could be total hogwash:)

Get some exact measurements of the hull, all dimensions, and good photos all around. NB is awesome at identifing these hulls and I'd bet he can tell you the actual age of the hull.

Any way you shake it, congrats on your new (old) Islander!:D

Re: 86 islander.

My buddy had a 90HP V4 on a 21-22' Chieftain. It planed quickly but only had a top speed of about 25MPH. I've got some videos of it here http://s176.photobucket.com/albums/w200/ezmobee/Chris Boat/?mediafilter=videos

I'd really try to find something bigger than your 3 cyl Merc.

Sweet hull though, congrats! I wouldn't mess with the title, that's just asking for trouble. Be interesting to know what the history on this boat it.

I also have a 1977 1750 v6 mercury that needs rebuilt. A good boost in power but at a cost in weight (maybe 100lbs heavier) i need to see if parts are still available though. Do you think thats a better choice? Sorry but i want to cruise around 25 not top out there...the only thing i am worried about is the age and parts availability of the older motor .

That would be a more appropriate choice and would be great power for that hull.

Well something that sounds just a tad more realistic is that maybe it was re-furbished around 1986 when the decals and that windshield were readily available, so I'm sticking fast with 1967 and a refurb. But I do think JAS's story would make a great HBO miniseries :) :)

Re: 86 islander

Well if it's painted on then that settles it. Everything starcrast does is with decals. Always did.

Bud don't get me wrong here, this is an awesome boat. I'll take the old school lapstrake hull over the new stuff any day. And as I said before, this is identical to my boat. Mine was made in 66. Then they dropped the windshield and added the cabin in 67 for this model. Heck they were even the same color.

and whatever it is, you have a great boat. Can we get some interior shots?
