Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Ok Sunday night post....

Well we were able to get the water pump installed and the drive back together. No real issues, just followed the service manual and all went well.

Also got the bellows in and the gimbal back together for the most part....I did come to the realization that the bellows tool is a must!....and since we didn't have one we still have to connect the drive shaft and exhaust bellows to the gimbal housing....still waiting for alignment tool too....so that will have to be next week.

The motor ran on Sat. but was pushing fuel out of the top of carb so I knew the floats were stuck and I might as well pull the carb and rebuild it.....glad I did ! The pics will speak for themselves! Guess the PO never ran the bowls dry when they stored it....

Here are more pics of the progress!

can't wait to finish this!

drive ready to go!

caps done.

man thats ugly in there!

floats and needle and seats plugged and stuck....

The complete tear down.....waiting for carb kit... Glad I found out the the Weber carb is the same as Edelbrock and saved me 50% buying the kit from Summit Racing instead of Merc!

It only hurts till the pain goes away Wood!.... But then again some outboards have 6 carbs!! I would rather rebuild just this 1! and it's really a simple carb to do!

OMG:eek:Your pics, knowledge and thread are so helpfull. The only bad thing is that it reminds me of all the things I still need to get done:mad: This thread is like a guide to everything I am doing, can't thank you enough. I am heading to myrtle beach to work on our house so keep it comm'n. I will need it for my boat fix while I'm gone. Maybe me and moma will go out on the casino boat.

Thanks GracieBell I appreciate the kind words! I'm glad your finding this thread useful and informative. :)

So I had some time tonight and started on the carb clean up.....it's getting there!

cleaned up the floats

This is much better! Took some soaking in carb cleaner and a lot of brushing and scraping but all the nasty stuff is gone! :D

A few more parts to clean up and waiting for my rebuild kit to get here.....
I'll update the rebuild in a few days.

Hey Rick,
Have you ever rebuilt the Rochester Quadrajet? That's what I have on mine. I have taken it apart and cleaned. I have not ordered the kit yet but heard they are a lot of parts and hard to setup. But I also hear they are a real good carb. I've done a few carbs in the past but I'm not the best tuner on them.

Cool.. I overhauled my Rochester on the kitchen table too.. I almost thought about running it though the dishwasher for fun..

That carb looks just like a edelbrock... At least you have accessible mixture screws... I think the enginerd who designed mine made it hard on purpose..

Yes I have rebuilt many Q-Jets in my day....just use the manual for the carb and set it up to spec.... as far as the tuning yes they can be finicky but you will get it running well with some patients!

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

So I got the carb kit today and rebuilt the carb..... Here is how it goes for those who have never done it before. This is a Weber off a 5.7L Merc.

After disassembling the carb and cleaning it thoroughly in a carb tank or cans of carb spray blow out all the passages.

install your primary and secondary jets

lay out your parts your working with

install the gaskets for your venturi cluster

install the auxiliary valves & weights

install 4 venturis

Install the pump discharge ball and spring and install pump jet housing

Next we install the seats and needle valves

install the filter screen and seal washer on seat

tighten both seat assemblies

Install new seal and retainer for accelerator pump assembly

Install needle valves, float assemblies and accelerator pump plunger

Next step is to set float heights with gauge supplied in kit

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

This was a tough shot trying to hold this and take a pic.... This is setting the float drop, measure from the carb body with gasket installed to the bottom of the float assy at it's lowest point 2" is the spec

If the setting is off you bend the tab to attain the proper measurement

Now to set the float height....if the height needs to be adjusted hold connecting arm behind float and gently bend float until desired measurement is achieved.... the measurement is from the carb body to the top of the float...1 9/32" in this case

Now set the top of carb on lower half and install screws

Now install your metering rods and springs

insert spring

Install metering rod

install cap and tighten screw

next install idle mixture screw and spring

lightly tighten screw until it bottoms out DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! or damage to screw or carb will result!
Turn screws out 1 1/2 turns as you base setting

OK your pretty much done......install on motor :D
