Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Well I have a good Singer machine and will be using 110/18 needle and number 69 thread. I hope that will work out for me. :)

On another note got to the boat for a bit tonight... built an out drive stand and pulled the out drive out. Looks real good! Oil is super clean and I can believe it only has 120 hours on it.... next is the gimbal ring to see where the play in the steering is coming from...

A NEW boat minimum $12,000.
is that for a jon boat with a 50 horse?

Where can you get a 21ft bowrider for that with a 350?
We did a little shopping for fun this winter(couldn't go boating).. The new stuff is nice.. I sure would like to have one of those ones with the walkthough transom.. @28k I think I will have to wait.. A long time..

Don't worry rick.. Overhauled my carb at the kitchen table:eek:.. She wasn't real trilled with that, but more upset I used her toothbrush..
Now I got a garage.. The mancave is awesome.. I stay out of her kitchen, and she hates the smell of the cave.. It's the only place that I know where everything is..:D

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Made some great progress today!

We attacked the loose steering problem today....from what I gathered from another post I made was that the gimbal ring and square pivot pin might be worn out.
I tried to torque the 2 cinch bolts in the gimbal ring to 55 ft lbs to see if that would tighten the bite on the pin....no luck the torque wrench just clicked at 55# and the looseness was still there. Time to pull the ring.....

We disconnected all of the bellows and needed to drill 2 holes in the gimbal housing assy. housing to access the top nut and cinch bolt for the steering lever. I downloaded the template off the net and got an 1 1/8 hole saw and we went at it.

Holes worked out nice and was able to get to the bolt and nuts... Ok taking the upper nut off was a major PITA....had to tap it around with a chisel... We did manage to get it to spin off.

Next marked and pulled trim limit switches.... Ah the infamous hinge pins.... special tool....don't have one but I come to find a 1/2 allen key works out great!
Ok figure out how to disassemble the shift cable.....pull gimbal housing and drive out lower pin.

Disconnect any ground straps and got the ring out.

It seemed to me that the cinch bolts were seized in the ring and not letting the ring compress on the pin. They need to come out so after much penetrating oil, moving bolts back and forth with a breaker bar I was able to get the bolts out.
Cleared out the holes in the ring...wire wheel the bolts and greased them up.

Then I inserted the pin into the ring and torqued the bolts... AMAZING! It was tight as new and the shift lever too!

Well that just saved about $700+ dollars! So it seems that sometimes you don't need to throw new parts in your boat just clean things up!
Now we need to get a gimbal bearing, bellows kit, alignment tool and water pump kit.

Rick you might as well take that dang whale tail off the outdrive... When I got my rig it had one.. You can feel it drag.. Feels like a plow.. Makes my boat steer like poop and I think slows mine down.... Also is very sharp when you are swimming around the platform.. I would ditch it

Its a plastic one.... I'll take your word for it and pull it and see how the boat runs. Thanks

Yeah I had the sameone.. POS All it takes is four bolts to remove it.. IDK about the newones they make now.. They may help performance.. I would think if they really did.. They would come stock.. Some folks got em on their rigs..

I imagine I will be testing a few things when the time comes..... Ya know when we were moving along with the hull and glass seemed like we would hit the water soon but there is still so much to cover before hand.... I just refuse to cut corners on making the boat safe and run well.... If I'm in the drive I have to take it all apart just to be sure I don't have to go in again for something stupid that should have been addressed.

Should have resin and more glass this week and maybe some drive parts.:D

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

So I had a little time today and figured I would make the new wood seat bases for the bow cushions. I picked up a sheet of 5/8" underlayment plywood. This is the same ply I used for the deck and the stringers.

Underlayment ply is made with the same waterproof glue found in CDX ply but it is free of voids in the layers...it is also 5 layers and has a very nice surface on both sides.

Here is the pieces traced out and ready to cut.

the rough cut

note the edges of ply no voids ;)

I was able to get all but the 2 long back rests out of 1 sheet. I made sure to match up the opposing sides and take the belt sander to them so they were of equal size and shape....I also rounded the edges where the vinyl will stretch over so not to have a sharp edge to cut into the vinyl over time...

Now as soon as I can get some more supplies We can get this baby put together!

WOO HOO! just heard that we have bellows kit and water pump kit scheduled for tomorrow delivery! I just might be able to get most of the drive together and fire up the motor! A few more weekends and we may see a splash!

Go Go Go. I wish I had the cash to move as fast as your going. I'm just picking up the ply for the deck this afternoon & calling in the order for the glassing supply's. Although I'm not getting as involved as you with my re-do. Looks really great, one of the nicest builds I've read here so far.

Yay video time

Rick installed the new starter then we filled it with oil and turned it over just to get the oil throughout the motor. Installed new plugs and it fired right up and ran great:)
Another giant step forward, and we still have tomorrow:D
Rick will post pics of the rest of the work today

Well here is the video!!! The audio is not the best being under a tarp and raining but trust me, it was music to my ears!!!

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

I am really pumped up from working on the boat! We are making more great progress.

Today we cleaned up all the parts for the gimbal assy. sanded them down and gave them a paint job. There were small spots of corrosion blistering under the paint and since its off and in my hands it gets cleaned up. Even the trim cylinders came off and repainted....why not just a few more bolts and lines.

Next on the list was to fire the motor and since we know the outcome of that on to the water pump...

Split the upper and lower units.... that was a bit of fun since the studs had corrosion and make it tough to get apart. A few wood wedges and some penetrating oil did the trick!

The water pump impeller was toast! There was just pretty much the hub,no sign of the blades.....guess I better pull the t-stat and water hoses and look for chunks....

So here are some pics cuz we know how everyone likes pics!

original to the boat.... it needs some love

figured since I was painting can't forget in here....

trim cyld.

Nice and new looking again!

Smoked water pump..... This is why you always MUST check your impeller!

Nice to work on a stand

Why dose my engine overheat????

At least the lube in the out drive was pristine :D

Ready for tomorrow.... Things to do list water pump, all bellows, gimbal assy. but can't install the out drive....no alignment tool yet...guess the shipping is a bit slow on that one.... It's OK tho....still have a bunch of work on the interior to mess with ;)
