Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Rick,
I surely did not mean to offend you. I as well have little to spend on a boat with two little ones in Catholic school on a state employee salary. The reason for the concern is because I will be using some sort of foam I can buy at my local Lowes. Thanks again for all of your help. My little girl turns 6 on Sunday too(Gracie).

Funny as it may be, my little girl turns 3 years old next Sunday. I guess we are all basically in the same situation. Weather is looking better for me this coming week. I don't think I'll start a build thread, I'm not nearly as talented as "Opps" & "rick" & don't think anyone will get any useful information out of my project. I'll take a few pic's here & there. Waiting for your next installment rick, following you step by step. Can't wait to splash this year, it's all I'm thinking about.

There ya go I can feel the love!
There was no offense taken GB! I know you were just trying to get the facts. The blue Dow foam from HD or Lowes is fine for your boat and its easy to install. We just stood them on end and scribed a line with a knife along the stringer top and snapped the board off, laid the next piece against that and repeat. When we got to the other stringer we cut the piece to the thickness needed and pushed it in to tighten them all up. Pretty simple and quick about an hour or so to do all of the foam.

Maxxie I think you underestimate your abilities....This is not rocket science! You will do fine with your rebuild and we are always here to lend a hand if we can!

Happy birthday wishes to the kids! :D

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Interesting, when I contacted them back in 2006 they told me that the foam was for both flotation and structural reasons for my '88. Maybe they were built different than the 87 which is a somewhat different hull design. I am glad I used the pour 2 part foam, the boat is very solid with no hollow flimsy feel. Only thing I can say, is that this boat had 4 stringers (one in the bottom of the gas tank area as well) and just 2 transverse bulkheads. Maybe that's why FW said it was needed. I recall seeing the rebuild of a 22 ft Wellcraft on here that did not come with foam. It had a lot more transverse bulkheads. I think it's important to ask the manufacturer, and if that's what they said then it's all good.....

Rick, are you guys still planning on installing the live well?
Sorry to get off the foam subject but I'm curious on what you guys figured out.

PG, we scraped the idea of a built in livewell and will use a portable one, like a cooler retrofit.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

This is a fantastic thread!!:)

Tons of valuable info to supplement the the tons of
valauble info I've already received from Woodonglass
and others on my "Recommended Types of Fiberglass/Resin"
thread.;)

I'll incorporate more of this into my rebuild as well!!

I'm getting to the point (meaning I'm actually making
some progress:redface:) where I think I'll start a resto
thread as well and start posting some pics.

BTW Wog, YES, I did catch that Walter, it is NOT photoshopped!!:p:D

More like waiting for $$$ for supplies to show up:eek: But we have some supplies for the motor:D That will be the next focus, prepping and firing a motor thats been sleeping since 2002..... Then of course there's the outdrive to check out and service and bellows....

Much to still do....

Rick,

When you get ready to sew, let me know, and I'll help you all I can. Been learning a lot lately. Got some good resources for materials etc... Got an industrial machine the other day. Going to pick it up this weekend. My Son in law got it for me down In Oklahoma City. It should make things a lot easier when sewing 6 layers of vinyl when doing piping. My Fishing Seats that I did to EXPERIMENT on before I do my Bench Seats for my FLAMINGO Turned out pretty good using the OLD Sears that I bought for $35 bucks on CL. Seeing your skills on the boat I'm sure you will have no problems figuring out the sewing. It is NOT that hard once you get the machine settings all figured out. All I know is if I can do it YOU sure as heck CAN do it!!!!

Are you also doing some upholstery? I will be watching closely as I have to also replace some vinyl especially around the top gunwale inside where you crawl in and out of the boat on both the starboard and port side as well as some on the engine cover!

My mom was a seamstress years ago and I use to run a machine when I was a child.... I have 2 machines from her.
I just have to play around with them again :D

I will be picking your brains Wood!

That's going to be one of the last things I'll do.... As long as the captains chairs are in I can still get on the water :D

Wow...Woodonglass, I too have asperations of sewing my seats back together. I have a machine my aunt gave me and tried to do a seat. But it did not go well. I even took all of the stiches out and used the old for a pattern. The old seat vinyl even had tabs to line up. In the process I noticed that you can't really line anything up until you start stiching...VERy HARD...My uncle was a master Taylor at a high end shop and my Aunt is a seemstress. He has passed and she is 83, but still works. She said she had never done anything other that closes. They are both from Italy.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

I do have the plans in PDF form for the exact beanch seat that was used by Four Winns in their early boats. It is 72" wide. The 1st and 2nd pic is FW. The other 2 I kiffed off of the web. Thought someone may need it.

Captain chairs, well if their not ready just go with milk crates or 5 gallon buckets. :D That's how we did it in Arkansas. :)

Well GB you can check out my thread and see how successful I was on my experimental fishing seats. I plan on making some bench seats kinda like you have pictured. We'll see how it goes. My new machine will help alot I'm sure.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Feel'n your pain ric, I've got the old deck rough cut out & was hope'n to have the grinding done by now. At least you've got that tent, it must help somewhat. I'm in the process of putting the cash together right now to buy all the glass'n supply's I need all at one time. I'm going to do the math & buy a % of overture just in case. We got another 3-4 inches of snow this morning, temp's are in the mid to upper 30's with low 40's this afternoon. I hate this transaction of weather because every time the dog comes in his paws are just soupy muddy & makes a mess of the carpet in the den, but what ya gonna do? Anyway, the weather guy is talking 'bout 65/70 degrees by Tuesday, this just dumbfounds me. Ice still on at my favorite lake & I hope to be the first jack-hole on the water this year. Looking foreword to experimenting with the fiberglass thing this coming week, if it looks semi-decent I'll post up pic.'s. Hope the weather is turning for the better for you as well. I'll be in touch & glued to this thread. Good Luck
EDIT: Just a quick side bar, Wife gave me a green light to buy a Nikon D3100 digital camera yesterday, should have great photo's of rookie glass work at least:D
