Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Sunday night pic's

Not too many to show

Here is the flotation foam installed.

After the fuel tank was pressure tested and held 4 psi for over 24 hours in it went. We put some 2x4 blocks across for deck support and just gave them a few coats of exterior paint.

Finally we have a deck to stand on.....So nice to be this far along.... :D

Now we have to wait for about 2 weeks to get more resin to glass the deck in.
I guess in the mean time we can start on getting that 350 gone over and ready to fire it up!

Why did you go with styrofoam sheets instead of spray in expanding foam? I dont know what the advantages / disadvantages of each are, or why one vs. the other.

Because the blue foam was free! :D

Speaking of foam we did a test on chemical reactions to the foam sheets...

After a few hours.... Guess it's not too good for acetone, mekp or uncured resin....fuel and alcohol are Ok But if you have any of these things getting into your foam you have bigger problems!!

I would think acetone, given the right strength and time, would continue through the hull as well. We use a lot of it in car body resto. Mean stuff.

That is a great job on the deck, looks very professional. I cant wait to dive into mine, been working too much OT and not many days off lately. We use acetone alot at work as well, it will do a number on the wrong material that is for sure.

Love the blue sheets of foam.. Very inventive.... Fire up the 350 and tell us how it goes

This, along with a few other threads, have armed me with a wealth of knowledge to attack my boat with come warm weather. I need to check the deck for rot....

How many hours did it take you to strip out the old wood transom and stringers?

Nice work my friend. Did you check with the manufacturer and see if the foam was structural? Pour foam is not all that bad and can really help with puncture resistance and rigidity.

Re: 87 Four Winns 210 Horizon resto

Hi Ice,
We didn't have to do the transom. The deck and stringers took about 2 days with 2 of us. Preping the hull for the new wood took about 4 more.... I think we have about 175 man hours in the project so far,but we had some tough working conditions. Snow cold and being in a tarped in structure not a garage. We didn't pull the cap so working under and around it was a pain.... I can't wait till we can pull the tarp off and work in the open air! Running back and forth for tools and supplies ate up time, could have done it in half the time if it was in a shop :D
