no need to drill, epoxy, and re-drill. simply pick up a transom connector for a bilge hose, make the hole big enough in the ply for the connector and a few layers of glass, recess a bit for the connector flange so the top of the flange is even with the top of the ply. then after glassing, cut off the connector to about an inch long, bed in with 5200

this way you can buy standard bilge hole plugs and plug the cooler if you want.

Seasense Baitwell / Bailer Plugs - iboats

When I did my coolers for the boat, I used a layer of 1/4" ply on the bottom over the foam with a 3" hole to make the recess for the connector

Re: '89 Bayliner Avanti restoration - where to start?

Thanks for the reference material Scott.

I had an idea that I probably need to address before I start the rebuild. I want to add posts in the floor to put casting chairs in. That way I can fish from it with a quick switch of the seats. The last post in the deck would double for a table or something else that I could slide down in the post slot. How would I go about preparation of these posts and all that?

Thanks.

The demo just keeps getting better. This is the bulkhead and engine mounting block just before the bilge. Or what's left of it. Wood has turned to paper...naturally. Wow.

It's scary to look across your favorite waterway & see hundreds of boats, and wonder 'Which have no idea how close to major problems they really are........'

Because that ^^^ is lurking below decks & in motor mounts...

Knowing you took the time, effort & money necessary to find & correct all that nastiness makes enjoying it when you finish, all the better.

now you know why we all said gut it all. wood rot on boats is like rust on cars. once it is coming thru somewhere, time to roll up the sleeves.

regarding your seat bases, there are mounting sockets for the pedestals. they look like a small diameter dog bowl. put a back-up layer of plywood under the floor in that area so the lag bolts have something substantial to bite into. there are both surface mount and recessed. if you go recessed, you will need to know where you want to put it during the final floor glassing so you can seal the holes with a layer of cloth

no need to chisel out that wood in the stringers, just get a sawsall and cut it flush.

The stringers are mush. I can pull them out with my fingers which is just amazing to me.

I haven't given up guys. Just wanted to let you know I was still all over this. I spent the last week on vacation at the beach which made me want to come back and finish this boat. Tonight I cut out the middle stringer. That leaves me with an empty hull. Tomorrow I am going to get a new blade for the oscillating tool and do some precision cutting on the remaining fiberglass that's left over from me cutting out the stringers and bulkheads. That should at least make my grinding experience shorter

It becomes much less difficult to stay motivated when the grinding is done.....

Interesting reading, all of this,Avanti. I bought an 84 170DLI back in May. PO had redone it. New transom, interior, I looked thru the Ski locker & cooler, bow storage areas, all looked good. I've got the OMC stringer 400 like Scott. Had to rebuild the carb, still it runs great & that deep V hull rides dry & cuts thru the chop like a knife. In fact it rides so dry last week when it was 103 I was cutting back thru my wake with the trim all the way down trying to get wet. you''re gonna love this boat, mine runs out to 38 mph, not too shabby for a deep V I think. I'll have to ask Scott how his ran. Good luck puttting it back together

change your prop, I was hitting 41. I ran a 19 pitch stainless prop for cruising and a 17 pitch stainless for water sports. Usually had to put the spotters in the bow to get skiers up right away with the 3.0.
