Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Well I told you folks we were gonna be a little slower on this one, but I still feel like I should apologize for the inactivity. We had another work marathon in DC last week and I've also been a little busy readying the Liquid Limo for the trip to the valet service at Lake Anna. In order to store the boat on the racks there, we needed fiberglass bows and a decent cover. So we got that accomplished and the only thing left is replacing the stainless tilt lines on the back that keep leaking. They'll be here on Friday and we'll have that boat ready for the lake.

I spent the day today tweeking The Admiral's jet ski trailer. New lights and transom tie down brackets for the jet skis and now that's finished. She's really excited about the jet skis!

So, back to the Mariner. As you all know, we've discovered a few leaky/missing rivits. Here's a representative shot of what we're dealing with. Some are ground off, some are just loose, and a couple are just gone!

Mariner62.jpg

You can also see the PO's fix for leaking rivits. I think it may have been a poor JB Weld application. Basically it didn't work out so well:D

We spent a couple evenings last week with the baby sledge hammers pinging the ones that just needed tightning up. On the snapped off or missing ones, we just drilled them out, shot the hole full of 5200, and thru bolted a stainless panhead fastener with stainless lock washer and nut. We still have several to do and once we get them all done I'll go back and grind off the excess bolt. The pan head fasteners fit the outside of the hull just like a rivit and I'm not really concerned with the phillips head indent in the head. We're gonna paint the bottom anyways.

Mariner63.jpg

Working on the boat on that rickity million dollar trailer was getting to be a real pain, so we pulled it off the trailer and I spent the afternoon yesterday blocking it up with some scrap lumber left over from the deck roof we did last week. This is where she'll set until we get the gluvit in and the flooring and transom done. At our current rate of production, I figure about two years:D

We'll be converting the new trailer we purchased last month for the LL and using the galvanized trailer the LL sets on now for this boat.

Still pluggin away at it in my spare time here. It's Easter morning and we're empty nesters so I figured I'd get a little done before the evening cookout.

Plugged all the holes in the stern and started the waterhose up to fill up the bilge and check for leaky rivits. This hull hasn't been very well taken care of so I want to be sure we take care of all the rivits. My wife and I finished drilling out all the visibly damaged ones and replaced them with the thru bolt/5200 method we showed on the last post a couple days ago so this is the next step.

Here she is all filled up.

WOW! All I can say is I'm glad we did this watertest. Lots of leaks-probably around thirty or so. Most are only drip leaks but I did find one more rivit on the keel near the bow that was missing the head and it leaks pretty bad. I don't know how I over looked it but I'll be drilling it out tomorrow and taking care of it. We'll also ping all the marked rivits this week and then apply a good coat of gluvit, let it cure and watertest again.

I also managed to get the rest of the outer rub rail and the vinyl removed from atop the gunwale.

Wow! I can't believe after all your work she was still that leaky. Once you get those fixed and then the gluvit I'm sure it will be good. I like your boat stand. Nicer than working on a trailer.

Hey Jason..

I think (dangerous) that PING and BUCK may be the same..

Hammer on outside, hammer on inside at the same time..Def a 2 man job
One hammer acts as an anvil, actually

Oh and NB..
Man I could have used that boat stand today..spent half the day in 90 degree heat jacking up and fixing the bunks from my Wilber and Orville re enactment..though I think I went further

Thanks CBK!

So just to be clear...

This would be done just to make those rivits just a bit fatter - tighten things up and hope that it may seal? Of course Gluvit sure helps eh!

Cheers!

Yeah E that trailer is waaay shot:D

JAS & JS, I'm not gonna swear you can get it back in but you should be able to. I'll be going with new since mine was shot (along with just about everything else on the boat)

The Admiral is applying pressure for me to buy a better hull IE a higher bow deep V 22 footer and scrap this one. But, I've done got mad now and refuse to give up on this one. I WILL WIN THIS BATTLE:mad:

And I guess ping and buck are the same. I have a tendency to make up my own words as I go!

JAS&JS just drill out the rivit on the end, pry it out with a screwdriver, grab it and run. To reinstall just reverse and put the bottom flange in and work the top in with a crafstman cotter key extractor.

And Kev...... just get some wax on that boat and get it ready for tinstock:p

Yeah Joe I've been following along. I don't post on a lot of the threads but I enjoy seeing how everyone else attacks the problems.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

OK this post will cover several days of work on the Suisse cheese hull that I?m calling a boat!

After the water test we went back and drilled out the damaged rivet on the keel and installed another thru bolt/5200 repair. Then we decided to water test again and realized most of the leaks were coming along, and I?m not sure what it?s called so I?m gonna call it the port stabilizer keel. With no way of being able to see which rivet is letting the water in we decided to buck all the rivets on that keel.

So we got up on Saturday morning at 4:30 am and drove to DC to install a bunch of automatic door openers. We arrived home around 3:30 and my nephew and I jumped on the rivets. Once we finished all the keel rivets I took him home and began jacking the bow of the boat up higher so I could clean it out to ready for the gluvit. Here?s a shot of the bow on the stand just cause I think it?s so cool.

Mariner70.jpg

Then I got out one of my razor decal scrapers and about a hundred blades and went to work on the cursed carpet residue and the built up glue. Here?s a before and after shot.

Mariner67.jpg

Mariner68.jpg

Worked out pretty good for what it was but I?ve got very little skin left on my hands!

Mariner69.jpg

Then I used the shop vac and finally the water hose and we ended up with this. I finally got everything put away and in the house about 8:30. Man, that was a lonnng day!

Continued due to too many pics!

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

So after breakfast this morning the admiral decided to work on her flower gardens freeing me up for gluvit! Here?s what I started with. 2 new gallons and about a half left over from the Liquid Limo.

Mariner71.jpg

The mixture is 5 parts A and 1 part activator. Pretty hard to screw that up. So I spent a good while digging sand blasting debris and more of that danged foam out of the keyways for drainage. Folks I gotta say at this point that I?d like to get my hands on the moron that came up with the bright idea of using poured in place foam in boats. I?m callin em keyways but I know there?s another name. The foam fills em all up and the water stays trapped in the boat.

So after that and another round with the air compressor and shop vac, I mixed up a tub of gluvit and went to town. Here?s a shot of the application. You just slather the stuff on the rivets.

Mariner72.jpg

Since the bilge was in such rough shape on this boat, I decided to coat the entire bilge. Here?s a shot of it all done. Total gluvit in the bilge was 1.5 gallons.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Well I got the gluvit in yesterday and covered the boat with poly so all the whatever you call those things falling off the oak trees wouldn't get in it over night. By late afternoon today it was set up very well so........

I rigged the John Deere to the bow eye and ran an Ibolt thru the drain hole with some bolts and big washers and hooked the engine hoist to the stern.

We lifted her up and did the twist and now she's flipped and ready for some bottom work. Here's a couple shots of the process.

Before you pour in new foam, now's the time to install a new, larger fuel tank in the center line. Wish I had done that when I had mine torn apart. 19 gallons gets me incredibly far, but I carry one or two 5gal cans with me all the time just in case. Course your body of water and stomping grounds may be smaller than mine. I run 6 miles just to get to 1st island of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. It's 20+ miles to the eastern shore where the great fishing is.
