Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Here?s a couple shots of the partially finished first half(just to give you folks an idea of how bad it was).

And here we are with one half completed. I did find a few more areas of the skin cancer on the bottom most portion of the hull but it?s more cosmetic that structural.

We?re getting violent thunderstorms periodically for the last couple of days so it?s hit or miss and my DSL/Phones have been down.

Looks like one more long day and I?ll be ready for some light Marine Tex work and then comes the Zinc Chromate and sandable primer.

Ugh, following this restore is making me nervous... If you make this thing look half as good as the LL I fear I?ll be tempted to convert my Holiday to CC?. Excellent work, your restores are amazing!

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

Thanks guys!
HFS, that 150 is a tad on the large side. We're getting ready to fire her up and the old wooden stand was leaning a bit to much for me. Plus now it's on wheels so we can move it around when we need to.

BTW, I also just got the recovered console cushions back from the upholstry guy. As soon as I finish the bottom paint, I'll start working on the console. Lots of work to do there also.

Now, seriously, does anyone know where I can get my hands on a 25 foot manual choke or bicycle type cable???

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

OK, I had to work Friday and some guys came over to have their deer measured Saturday so basically all I accomplished on the boat was a quick trip to DC to pick up some Zinc Chromate and another trip to Home Depot for more sanding pads.

Got up at 7 am this morning and jumped all over it. They?re calling for upper 90?s starting tomorrow and I want to at least get the ZC on.

First thing on the list was the complete other half of the sanding. Up to this point it?s just been a couple hours each day. I?m using the rotary sander and a smaller one called a mouse for the hard to get areas. The base of the sander looks like an iron. For the rivits we?re still using the wire wheel on the trusty Ryobi cordless. I have 17 batteries and two of those 8 battery docking stations??

Here?s a shot of the cursed decal removal. Basically I?m just cookin them with the torch and razor scraping just like the other side.

56 sanding pads and about 15 bottles of spring water later and here we are.

I wasn?t kidding about the 56 pads??

Before I finished the sides I mixed up a batch of Marine Tex and did some repairs to the port side and the bow. I had plenty left over so I skim coated several areas of the skin cancer we talked about earlier. You just wipe the area down with some paint thinner and while it?s flashing off mix the two part Marine Tex and go at it. Then before it sets all the way you hit it with a wet rag to knock down the high spots so you don?t spend a day sanding later.

Here?s a couple of the repairs.

By the time I finished with the side sanding and the cursed decals, the Marine Tex was set up. I hit it with the mouse sander and some 100grit and blew everything off with the air hose. Then I mixed up a batch of water and vinegar and scrubbed her down.

Then I hit everything several times with the compressor and after it dried I shot 7 cans of ZC znd now she's ready for primer. Clocked out and 7pm and I got one heckova sunburn:eek:

NB,

The boat is looking really sharp! Great work so far and keep it up!

To get the decals off my boat, I used a torch and a BBQ scraper. It worked out pretty good.

Glad to see the progress.

Sprint, you're absolutely right. Hull corrective measures on this one have been a bear!

Undercoat and primer should arrive in another day or so.

Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild

So, with late evening showers forecasted, I decided to get up first thing and try for getting a coat of primer on the bottom and sides. Temperature was 80 degrees and humidity was at 65% so we should be good spraying outside for the primer.

I brushed off the ZC with a soft bristle brush, hit it with the compressed air and did a wipe down with a tack cloth.

Then I broke out the ole cheapo Husky HVLP sprayer, mixed up some Pettit 6149 Easypoxy White Undercoater and went at it.

I?m doing two coats so this one is a little on the thin side and you can see the lap marks. Not really a big deal since it gets another coat in a day or so. This is a sandable primer so the next coat will be heavier and then we can sand it out with some fine grit sandpaper before we shoot the paint. Total material used-1 ? quarts with no spraying thinner. Here?s a couple shots of the finished product.
