9.9 Mariner ignition issues

An old family friend dropped off his little Mariner at the house today while I was at work. I have never worked on one of these so I appreciate all the advice I can get. I am not sure the year as I cannot get the serial number to pull up.



Compression is 112/110. I was told it had spark on the top cylinder but nothing on the bottom. It is true that you can see a spark if the plug is grounded to the block but there is no spark at all on my open air tester so I would say it has no spark on either cylinder. I did disconnect the kill switch before testing.

What should be my first move?

Maybe reconnect the kill switch if you mean you just pulled the lanyard off, which kills spark.

The stop button is what I disconnected. I tried it both connected and disconnected and only mentioned it in case someone suggested that it could be be a bad kill switch causing there to be no spark. There is no lanyard on this motor that I can see.

Does that motor have a cdi or is it points

flyingscott, I honestly don't know. I was hoping the serial number search would give me ideas but I came up with nothing. The serial number is lower than anything I see listed. It is a Yamaha made Mariner if that helps. I will go out and look for a cdi box.

Telling the truth on myself, I assumed this motor was CDI until you asked me about it flyingscott. It does appear to be a points motor though so I can make a go with that. At least, I don't see a box. Thanks.

Can someone point me to a parts breakdown on this one? I can't match the serial number with a parts list.

Your best bet is the dealership and parts are expensive.
