Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Quick update, this past weekend did a little more prep work and sealing of the deck boards while Im waiting for my vinyl to arrive. Original delivery date should be Thursday but not holding my breathe for UPS Freight. In the mean time, got my contact cement, rivet gun, and a few other tools. Still trying to find the "J-rollers" for the vinyl but the local big box "hardware" stores dont have them...not surprising around here.

Here's your rollers, found them at the Folsom HD:

3 in. J-roller for Plastic Laminate-02000 at The Home Depot

Extendable Floor Roller-10-955 at The Home Depot

I tried some of the 3/16" dia. wide flange rivets and had some problems with them not being long enough for the 3/4" plywood with the vinyl wrapped around the back at the perimeter of the deck so I went with the 1/4" dia. dome head which I could get in a longer length.

What thickness plywood did you end up getting?

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Thanks for the links will check them out tonight when I get home and hopefully pick up some rollers by this weekend. UPS shows the vinyl out for delivery today so should get it as well as my Vday gift from the admiral....a pair of surface mount LED docking light for the bow.

I stayed with the 1/2in ply for the main deck and 3/4in on the bow "casting deck".

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Spent a couple hours today putting down some vinyl on the deck boards. Was a bit intimidating because of how large the areas are, but had some help laying it down. Heres a couple pics of the first two boards.

That's going to excellent when you get it all done!

The bigger pieces can be a little intimidating at first and that's why I suggest doing the smaller pieces first to get the "hang" of it... but it looks like you've got it under control.

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

I figured I'd just jump in head first. Actually, I had a friend over so figured why not put him to work and get a couple of the bigger pieces done. I'm thinking the most difficult is going to be the sides and the top of gunwells. Those are some long narrow strips and coating both surfaces first and then proper alignment is going to take patience patience patience

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Just a quick update from this weekend but no pics as the camera was full of pics from taking kids to Monster Jam last night and I didnt get them downloaded until everything was put away. Anyway, picked up some pedastool bases and poles for the rear seats on Saturday. Spent today finishing laying the vinyl on all the deck boards, cutting out all but one last piece of wood to complete project, and started coating them. Since I have next Friday off work, and temps are supposed to be in the 70's, the plan is to pull her out and powerwash, reinstall bow cap, rivet bow gunwells back into place and on Sunday lay the vinyl on the top of gunwells.

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Been a bit since last update, in part because most of the work has just seemed to be tedious little things, mainly putting vinyl down on some of the smaller parts. I also was given a pass last saturday from the Admiral as we took the Harley for a nice 225 mile ride. But it was back to work Sunday and a couple nights this week. Here are some pics of the latest progress

Port side wall. Note, I layed the old deck boards back inside as a work platform so if I made a mess with the glue, who cares.

Hoping to finish port side this weekend and possibly get started on starboard. For Valentines Day the Admiral bought me some nice SS docking lights to mount under the rail on the bow that I might get installed as well.

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

Well, the progress continued today. Finished both port and starboard top rails and bow side. It's amazing what I can get done with few distractions. While I appreciate people stopping by to help, I've found I spend more time answering the question "Why are you doing it that way?". It seems everyone, despite having never tackled such a project, thinks they "know" better ways. For example, the Admiral's father still thinks I should have layed the deck down and then vinyled it. And my fishing buddy, he thinks I should have just painted the deck. And of course, the Admiral, who keeps telling me "It's just a fishing boat, stop being so anal about everything"

Anyway, here some pics of today's progress.

Bow mark up to give an idea of what its going to look at

Brainstorming with port console and side panel. Going tomorrow to get an estimate to have the consoles powder coated. Originally the idea was to vinyl them like everything else, but thinking about adding a bit of contrast. Considered painting them but because sides are high traffic area figured theyre going to get scuffed up. Havent ruled those options out yet, until we have estimate.

That boat is gonna look frickin' sweet when you're done! Powder coating the consoles for contrast is a great idea!

Your FIL and fishin' buddy just can't visualize how good the boat is going to look when it's done, they'll be impressed when it's finished.

I've had people ask me why I had to rivet the vinyl down to the decking:laugh:

Have you skinned your knuckles on the vinyl while rolling it yet?

Your vinyl work looks great. Doing the consoles in something different is a great idea because I do think it would be too much vinyl otherwise.

No skinned knuckles but the old back sure is getting sore. Between being tall and having to bend over so much for everything and climbing in and out. Will be worth it when done though

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

The admiral picked up the consoles from the powdercoat shop last night but no pics because I wasnt satisfied with the job and will be taking them back Saturday morning. Somehow they managed to miss a couple spots that wouldnt matter if they were on the underside or somewhere out of site, but these are right in the open. Also, there are a couple areas that turned out with very little texture or color contrast. I will say however, the areas that were done well and turned out are AWSOME! And while I thought the price would turn me away from having it done I was surprised, $100 for both and I dropped them off on Monday and they were done Tuesday. Well worth it if they fix the issues I have

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

So I dropped the consoles off Saturday and the owner was outside when I pulled up. I explained I wasnt happy with the job, and before I could discuss the areas, he pointed out the same issues as well as a couple of other and said "This is sloppy work and should never have left this shop like this". He said he would have them resprayed and ready for pickup that afternoon. I was certainly pleased by not only how they stood behind the job, but were willing to have them done by that afternoon. Since Im not going to be ready to install for a couple weeks I told him time was not an issue. Monday morning he called and said I could pickup anytime. WOW!!! What a difference. Looking for camera to post a pic or two with console sitting in position. The powder coating ads a great contrast to what was going to be an otherwise overly grey interior.

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

I usually dont put much thought into how much time I spend on this project, mainly because I set a splashdown date far enough out that it shouldnt be an issue making it, and because its mainly a weekend project. However, that changed this past sunday. My normal routine is to hit the garage, plug the iphone into the stereo and load up Pandora to provide the tunes. But on sunday, about an hour into work, the music shutdown and when I went to investigate I found a notice that I had maxed out my 40 free hours for the month. WHAT!! With the exception of the last couple weekends, I hadnt thought I had done much this month.

Here are the latest pics of the progress.
I spent a good portion of Saturday afternoon working on the bow. So far this was the most difficult as holes werent lining up and had to keep refitting, adjusting, refitting, adjusting....Doesnt help that I dont have the smallest hands and there just isnt a way to sit comfortably while working this section

Quick mock up with decking down and the port console to see how powdercoating looks. Good choice in color by admiral! Not the masking tape marking the stringer location

The supports between stringers were starting to sag and one had even cracked so I added 1"x1" angle alum cut to fit on both side of the old ones

Really nice work as usual. Looking forward to seeing the consoles installed and a better pic of them. Looks like they came out really nice and match the darker tones in the vinyl.

Re: '93 Monark Pro 1900 rebuild

I thought I had posted this one last nite as well but guess not. Gives a much better look at consoles color. its a dark gray, almost black with a silvery vein through it. It looks so good Im probably going to take a couple more pieces in to be done for just a little more contrast. 19ft of all gray vinyl was just going to be too much IMHO
