How about that SeaRay? Any Progress???

Not recently. It's too hot. I put it in storage and brought my fishing boat to the house. When it cools down, I'll bring it back home. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

HEY everyone, I'm back. The weather has finally started to cool off and I brought the Sea Ray back home a few days ago so I can get back to work on it. I am still trying to get all of the outdrive stuff off of the transom so I can survey the damage. The pins that connect the sterring cable and power steering to the outdrive have grown together. I am trying to drill the pins out and that has proved to be an undertaking itself. For whatever reason, I just cannot get all the way thru the pin. I guess I will work on it a little more tomorrow if I get time. I am working nights this week through Saturday so my time will be limited. Once I get the motor plate off of the transom, I'll post some pics of the inner transom because I have a few questions as to which direction I should go. Thanks, Steven

Steven,

Welcome back and yes it is nice to have cooler weather. I really hope this holds right here for a while. We might actually get some work done. Sorry I can't help with ideas on the steering issues. Mine just came apart and went back together like it was suppose to. I did have to press out the pin on the end of the cable but once it started to move it came right out. I assume you have some bad corrosion of some kind going on there.

Hope to see your updates as we enjoy this awesome weather.

For some reason, those two pins are the only places on the entire boat that has corrosion. You can tell just looking at the boat and trailer that it has never seen salt water. You just gave me an idea. Tomorrow I will get a c-clamp and small socket and try to get the pins to move. Thanks, Steven

And that is exactly the tools I used.
Hope it works.

Well, the socket / c-clamp trick did not work. The pins still did not budge. I guess I will have get my a torch after them to see if a little heat can persuade them to let go or keep drilling. Anyone have any other ideas? Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Steven,

I just read through your post and it looks like you have quite a project there! It's a beautiful boat and worth the effort to bring back to life. I've just begun working to get my 89 back on the water. Don't think I have quite as much work, but I'm not done poking at wood yet. Most of the time on my boat got racked up on the San Bernard when my folks had a place on the river. What a great place to ski - I really miss it!

Anyway, good luck with your project!

Progress is still slow. It seems that I am a slave to my job right now. The money is good and Santa is coming to town so I can't complain too much. Hopefully after the first of the year I should get a break. We have been short handed for the last 6 months and it looks like we are finally getting some relief soon. Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Well, I have finally found a little time to get back to work on the Sea Ray. I only broke two drill bits but I mananged to get both pins drilled out on the sterring cable and steering arm. Those were a pain in the rear. From there, I took the boat to my parents house for a little help removing the gimble housing and inner motor plate. Once removed, you could really see the rot in the transom. I'll try and get a few more pics tomorrow, but it looks like all that needs to be replaced is the center 2'x2' area directly around the engine assy. My family wishes everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving. We all have a lot to be thankful for. Thanks, Steven

Glad to see you got those pins out and the housing removed. Now comes the fun part with the transom. The weather is quickly changing here. looks like we get a bit of the cold but I am gonna fix my floor anyway.

Have a great Turkey Day and enjoy family and friends.

just read your thread Steve. From a fellow gear head..we need some pics of the Road Runner too. :)
Unlike you southern folks..I get all kinds of cool weather (Canada) to work on my boat.
I stored my car (86 IROC) in a converted school so I could keep the boat home to work on this winter..
Love the lines on the Sea Rays..good luck with your restoration.

That's a sweet looking IROC. I'm a Bowtie guy also. Everything else in my driveway is Chevrolet. My truck, wife's Trailblazer, my Cobalt, and the Sea Ray. Although it is now Government Motors, I would still buy GM. My first vehicle way back when, was a '78 Z-28. That is still one of my favorites and hopefully I will have another one some day. Thanks, Steven

Thanks for the offer Jay. I'll probably be taking you up on it soon. I am still deciding which way to go. There is a 2'x2' area around the outdrive that is thicker than the rest of the transom. I am hoping that I will just have to replace that section. I am also contimplating using Sea Cast but I am not sure yet. I will try and get some better pics of what I have to work with in a few days. Thanks, Steven

Thanks Steve. I've owned her for around 7 years now. It's a Florida car originally which is why it's not rusted out.
I'm the same as you..I have a Sierra crew cab and a Colorado crew cab in the driveway..love those trucks. :D

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

I finally had a day off and made a small amount of progress on the Sea Ray. I was hoping that just the middle section of the transom was all that was rotted. Well, all hopes were squashed like a bug once I cut the center skin away from the transom. It appears that the whole transom will have to come out and be replaced. The wood that is against the outer hull is rotted as well from one side to the other. I was really surprised at how well the Dremal Multi-Max tool was able to cut that piece off of the transom. It only took about 15 minutes at the most. Anyway, here are a few pics of what I found. Thanks, Steven
