Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Steven,
Looks like a good day of work done. That Muti tool is my favorite tool on the glass. Quick, easy and very controllable. It makes short work of the cutting. I have the harbor Freight version not as good as the dremel but gets it done. Are the 2 side panels in the same shape or did you get lucky and no rot on them?

Keep going work looks good.

have a great holiday time with the family

Unfortionatly, the two side pieces are gone as well. If I get time, I'll try and get them cut out tomorrow after church. If I don't hear from you again, I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas. The next time I see Santa, I gonna give him a swift kick in the rear. You should see the bill he just sent me (lol). Thanks, Steven

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

I had a little time today to work on the Ray and I was able to get all of the transom wood removed. I still have the glass to remove that was between the wood and the gelcoat. When I finished, I pulled the boat to the local car wash to vacuum out all of the rotten wood, and when I returned home, I noticed the drivers side wheel was leaning. I a five mile trip, the wheel bearing went out and was on the edge of coming off the spindle. I got lucky on that one. I'll replace the wheel bearings and get back on the transom tomorrow I hope. Now, what is the best way to remove the fiberglass sheet from the transom? Thanks, Steven

I was hoping to just replace the wheel bearings, but the hub was in pretty bad shape. Made a trip to Academy and bought two new hubs ready to go. If all goes well tomorrow, I should have the trailer ready to go. It appears that now that I have had a little time to work on my boat, Mr. Murphey has dropped by. Hopefully the reindeer will take him on when they come through next week. What is the best way to remove that layer of fiberglass on the transom? Hopefully, it is not with a grinder. That could prove to be a very itchy deal. Thanks, Steven

I'm confused by what you mean by fiberglass layer. Aren't we looking at the outer skin in those pictures above?

difficult to tell if we are looking at the inner skin or a layer of glass between sheets of plywood.

however....its time to pull the grinder out.

read the safety basics of grinding and glassing

It appears to be a layer of fiberglass that was between the wood and the gelcoat or outer skin. My initial thought was that the wood for the transom was fiberglassed before it was installed in the transom. I'll have to take another look at it now and make sure there is no more wood behind the fiberglass. I was sure hoping there was another way to get this off without the grinder. With the cool weather, maybe I can ge a level "A" suit and with a SCBA and wear it. That should keep the glass off of me. Thanks, Steven

Looking good, keep the faith and be persistant. I'd love to have a Ray of the that year and size, but my 16' will do for now. Good luck and keep us posted.

sail on.....tink

Hey man, I have joined the Sea Ray family, and got screwed by the PO. She was rotten through and through. I am now doing the same thing you are doing, but on a 220. I just started the demo process, and it is slow going.

Jay,

I just ran across your Sea Ray thread. I'll watch it because Iam sure you will pass me up in the process and have some good ideas on going back together. Since the new year is here, noone is one vaction now, so I hope to have a lot more time to work on mine. My monthly 7 days off start this Thursday, so I hope to get some work done on the boat. Thanks, Steven

Seeing what you did with the supports for the helm has given me some ideas.

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

I have a quick question. I took my boat to a fiberglass shop last week to see how bad it would hurt (pocket book) to have just the stringers and transom (structural stuff) replaced. The guy looked at my boat and gave me a quote of $2500.00 to replace the transom, stringers, floor, rebuild the front seating area, and then gel-coat everything once finished. I will have to supply the wood. Take a look at the current status of my boat and tell me what you think. I thought it seemed like a fair price. He said something like that usually cost around $3500.00 to do. The transom has already been removed and only the stringers in the engine arera are left in the boat. Other than that, it is basically a hull. That also includes grinding all of the old stuff out. I am just about finished restoring a '73 2030 John Deere tractor so it may soon be on the for sale list (lol). Thanks, Steven

I think that's a fair price. It would probably cost you almost a grand to do it yourself (I believe that's the going iboats estimation). If you do it, just make sure to try to pop in and check on his progress every step of the way. I've read some real horror stories on here. Once that deck is sealed up, there's no telling what's under there. Obviously this isn't going to raise the value of your boat by $2500 so only you know whether it's worth it to you or not.

I too have thought about that. Then I remind myself that this was a botched repair job to begin with. I can only trust myself now.

I am still having second thoughts about it as well. The main reason I considered it was to get the glass work done and behind me. I am having a real hard time trying to find time to work on the boat. It seems like when I am off, other priorities take over. My daughter (12) shoots shotgun and that is in full swing right now. Any spare time she has, we are out at the shotgun range bustin' clays. Thanks, Steven

The family comes first for sure. My family is a little different. We all LOVE the lake and they want to be out there just as soon as possible. So every day they ask me if I am going to work on the boat. I am actually looking forward to glassing. I just hated that stupid foam.

Re: '93 Sea Ray 200-BR rebuild (stringers/floor/engine)

Ok, I know this is a little off topic, but here is the real reason why I am not getting very far on my boat. My daughter has started shooting shotguns, and it seems this is where most of my time and money are going. The gun in the pictures is her third gun since Christmas. She got it this past Tuesday (3/15/11) and already has over 200 rounds through it in less than a week. She is having a blast (literally) and I have to admit, that I am also. I ended up buying me a new shotgun as well so I can go out with her and get schooled by a 12 year old. No really, she can smoke me with the clays and she loves it. I'll have to try and get back on the boat soon. Thanks, Steven

See, now that is cool. The boat can wait.
