A Brand New Kitchen.....almost done

My parents house has been around since the suburban boom of the 50's. The kitchen has not really been updated since. There has been talk by my dad for about 10 years now to redo the entire thing. Now that he has retired, all systems are go. Today he went to a football party with my mom, and I stayed home to start the demo. 8) 8)

I only have one picture of our kitchen before my dad took off the wall paper and wood panels.

I started at noon today and finished around 8, with the help of a neighbor. I have off tomorrow from work, and plan to start tearing the floor and subfloor up. Hopefully within the next two weeks the walls will be rocked and the new floor will be in. All the new appliances are in the garage just waiting to go in.

LOL, when you rent the point is to NOT tear stuff apart. 8).

If I were to have such a dinner party I would assume homemade brats, italians, and polish would be on the menu. BYOB.

Its a lot of work, but I enjoy this stuff. Has me thinking about maybe getting into the business.

So far the best thing is that this was a great excuse to buy a new sawzall.

Well it looks like the outside wall is using OSB so that has been updated with new siding or a add on since 1950.
Just put new OSB around the outside of this one built during WWII
Have fun and update the pics as you go.

Yeah, it was pretty bad. The soffit that was skinned in z-brick has been removed. The problem was that z-brick covers the entire wall behind the refrigerator and the wall when you walk into the kitchen. The glue from the wood paneling tore up the paper on the drywall pretty good on the other main wall. The wall paper walls weren't too bad, but there were a few bad spots here and there, and even on those walls there was wood paneling up to about the chair rail level. In the end it was just easier to re-rock the whole kitchen (except for the ceiling. I want nothing to do with that.) Plus it makes it easier for the electrician. We are up grading the service and we have to move a bunch of switches and outlets in the kitchen. Not to mention a 6 x 8 wall was removed to combine the kitchen and dining room into one space. The carpet is coming up in there so the floor will be continuous.


Link you are probably correct. I pulled the blueprints out and originally the house was skinned in cedar siding. Sometime before we moved in it was replaced with vinyl.

Yup, sanding tears up the paper coat of the "rock"... the mud is water soluble and blends well with a bit of the sponge.

I just did a small dry wall 3' X 8' earlier this year. Mud tape Mud let dry .. sand highs and fill in lows..
What a mess the sanding did make.

You can bet this is the first post I'm checking tomorrow.

As for the sponging verses sanding ... Just take a damp sponge and go over the spackle till smooth. You don't have to wait till it is completely dry, in fact it is easier if still a little soft, but not too soft or you will remove it all.

You don't need much pressure, and use a larger sponge. After the water drys, use a dry rag to remove the residue left from the water and sponge. Makes a nice, smooth finish without all the spackle dust.

Note - you may still need to sand a little when it is completely dry, but not nearly as much.

Hi Pony. Great job you're doing there. I'm in for the same thing in January. Gonna take it down to studs and start from scratch. Let me know if you run into any unusual problems or have any tips that would help a novice at this project.

HaHa....There is a Beer only refrigerator in the garage. If you notice I said "beer" not "water", so Budwieser would not be found there. 8) Only stuff in there right now is some Miller, some Leinenkuhgals, and some Jager.

Oh LT- the refreshment bottles were in the other room so as not to get dust in them.

We had been considering the sponging technique, but wondered about the extra time involved. We need to have this thing painted before the cabinets come next week. How much longer drying time would we be looking at?
