Any chance that rattle is just something in the L/U telegraphing through the drive shaft.

Mine had a rattle in yesterday too but it was the prop ventalating. The first time I heard it, it sounded like it was in the powerhead.

I post this with utmost humility. The rattle was a freakin' rusted latch riveted on the top of the splashwell that I haven't drilled off yet. I went out with a buddy and he pinned it. From the helm, it was impossible to tell exactly where it was coming from.

Must be the easiest engine trouble fix I've had yet. The replacement lower unit seems strong so far.

Cool... Wish my little fuel problem would have been that easy. Ethanol by the P/O in a 1991 engine that never quite had all the hoses replaced. Sucks.

If you are going to use the gluvit the foam has to be removed and I too do not like poured foam and would go with pieces.

If you fasten the deck with rivets you can glass over them..... if it must come up just drill off the rivet heads.

HA HA another starcraft....... the evil plan is coming together..... we starcraft people are taking over one boat at a time :D

im about to get my starcraft restore thread going too...

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

Hey everyone!
I'm just checking in. It has rained in RI nearly every day for the month of June. Progress on the Starcraft has been slow. Been doing a lot of fishing, though. Had the boat out a number of times - the Johnson has been trouble-free since I got that rattle figured out. She's a runner.

My biggest problem now is that the TUNA have showed up here in the northeast. I'll be fishing from my brother's boat (23 ft. trophy walkaround) for the next couple months. I plan to work on the Starcraft as weather allows. those damn fish sure screw up one's productivity.

For entertainment's sake, here is a video I put together from a shore fishing trip to Martha's Vineyard I took with my buddies back in June. Fishing was slow, but we had a great time.

Hiya, the boat looks great! Hope its still coming along. I noticed that in the photos of your bare hull, there are tabs all along the sides about where the deck would end on the sides. When did they start putting those in? Anyone know? I ask because my Mariner does not have those.

Keep up the good work, love the console and bench!

Matt-
I'm in the middle of the same type of rebuild--a 19'8'' 1966 chrysler polara 254--you can pull it up using my name. I had to remove all foam as you'll see in the photo's--then i had to put in cross-ribs as my boat only had foam for structural support. I used a product called steel flex--like gluvit to coat the entire inside of hull after i installed the cross pieces.

i have recently installed the main ribs and cut and epoxied all the decking. The bottom of the boat is painted with hammerite and the keel shield is installed and it will be awesome.

This is my 4th project but it is the biggest. Take your time and best of luck.

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

I'm back, everyone. My project has seen some major progress since my last update. Here is a link to my photo album.

http://picasaweb.google.com/mpprovost/Boat#

For you guys following me last year, you'll recognize where to pick up. I'm not finished yet, and she's a little rough around the edges. I was under the gun to get it ready for spring fishing this year. but, she's functional and (mostly done). I made some design changes. I axed replacing the original casting deck. Having those tall gunnels helps with maintaining your composure when casting from the bow in rough conditions. I moved the gas tank from in front of the console to under the bench. I wanted to keep as much free space up front as possible. Worked out pretty well.

I'm still running the ole Johnson. Since messing with the lower unit last year, she's been trouble-free. Trailer needs constant attention - seems I lose a freakin' roller almost every time I launch.

The "Baron" and I have had some great adventures so far this year. I took a solo trip around Race Point and down the backside of the cape, where I had a number of shots into busting tuna (something I didn't think I'd be able to do in my boat, but these fish were in close). I've had whales three rod lengths in front of the bow. (lemme tell ya, THAT gets your attention). Been doing well in Narragansett bay - there are some fish photos from May in my album. I'm taking care of odds and ends and waiting on the fall fishing to pick up - with visions of false albacore, bonito, and big stripers in my head.

Sorry I dropped off the grid for awhile there. Just wanted to give you guys the update.

Wow matt! I really like the home made console. Your rig is turning out nice! Must really suck having to stop and catch all those fish in between:D

Re: aaaand so it begins - starcraft rebuild

thanks, guys! I must admit, I have been missing my Starcraft brothers. I got sidetracked with work (just stupidly insane for awhile there), and the boat stalled out until March this year. I had a trip to host in the early weeks of May - and I had to haul some serious butt to get the Starcraft ready. I cut some corners, and my work is not done to the detail of some of your projects, but I'm proud of her. I just backed her into the driveway after an evening on Narragansett Bay, and I couldn't be happier with her. There's always going to be something that needs doing, but I'm over the hump :) Nice to touch base with you guys again!!!
