Re: Adding a tell tale to a V-4 Crossflow - and call for others
OK 3 cylender, 1977 Evinrude 70 hp tell-tale.
On this one there isnt much room to place a tell-tale as you will see.
I did get it done with no problems by useing smaller fittings found at the hardware store.
First I located where it should be placed and punched the spot.
I removed the head to make sure I didnt damage the cylender wall. All you need is a head gasket handy.
I drilled in the top of the head for a 3/16 fitting. I found a 3/16-24. I wanted to go as small as I could to keep the water pressure in the water jacket as high as I could and because there isn't much room for a larger fitting.
I drilled and tapped the hole in the head. Remember to use a bottoming tap.
I had to use a 3/16-24 X 1/8- NPT so I could use a 1/8 NPT to 1/4 hose barb 90.
I used teflon tape on all threads , liquid teflon seems to leak after a little time.
I got the head back on and routed the 1/4 " hose to its exit point makeing sure I didnt cut the hose too short.
The location where I placed my hose exit was to the rear of the motor so the driver could just look back and see the stream.
Becarful when drilling the hole for the hose, make sure it is in a clear area inside the covers.
I used a fitting that had a reduceing hole in it , it was about 1/32 or a little larger, I also placed a smaller tube inside the 1/4 tube to make sure I had good water pressure inside the motor.
I trimmed off the excess and used a rubber gromet to hold it in place. The house routing was right down the side under the coils and was the only route that didnt need too many bends in the hose. I tested it for leaks and had none so I guess its good to go as soon as I get the jet pump on it.
