OK 3 cylender, 1977 Evinrude 70 hp tell-tale.

On this one there isnt much room to place a tell-tale as you will see.

I did get it done with no problems by useing smaller fittings found at the hardware store.

First I located where it should be placed and punched the spot.

I removed the head to make sure I didnt damage the cylender wall. All you need is a head gasket handy.

I drilled in the top of the head for a 3/16 fitting. I found a 3/16-24. I wanted to go as small as I could to keep the water pressure in the water jacket as high as I could and because there isn't much room for a larger fitting.

I drilled and tapped the hole in the head. Remember to use a bottoming tap.

I had to use a 3/16-24 X 1/8- NPT so I could use a 1/8 NPT to 1/4 hose barb 90.

I used teflon tape on all threads , liquid teflon seems to leak after a little time.

I got the head back on and routed the 1/4 " hose to its exit point makeing sure I didnt cut the hose too short.

The location where I placed my hose exit was to the rear of the motor so the driver could just look back and see the stream.

Becarful when drilling the hole for the hose, make sure it is in a clear area inside the covers.

I used a fitting that had a reduceing hole in it , it was about 1/32 or a little larger, I also placed a smaller tube inside the 1/4 tube to make sure I had good water pressure inside the motor.

I trimmed off the excess and used a rubber gromet to hold it in place. The house routing was right down the side under the coils and was the only route that didnt need too many bends in the hose. I tested it for leaks and had none so I guess its good to go as soon as I get the jet pump on it.

I didn't have a need to use any of iwombats beaver goo stuff , and I was happy about that LOL

OH yea, the lifting eye did need to be set back so the fitting wouldn't touch it. I just used a couple spacers to move it back a little. Another picture I couldnt get on the other thread.

Forgive the shop area, I'am still working on hurricane damage things around the house.

I also have a buddy that just picked up an Evinrude for his boat. I'am not sure but I think its a 2 cylender,if it is I will get pictures of it also.

I will be putting a water pump on it for him. Might as well do a tell tail.

Thanks for the pics and all. I think I have enough to claim critical mass and complete the FAQ now. If I can get 2-cylinder pics I'll do a follow-up addendum at a later date.

Should be a constant steady stream. I think you're due for a new water pump, or you've got a clogged fitting. Shove a wire up there and see if it works better.

would this be the same procedure for a 1979 rude 140hp bubble back?? actully,I was thinking this was installing temp sensors with a temp gauge in place of the heat sensors and buzzer..

To motorboat: There is no benefit and some risk in eliminating the temperature switch and horn setup. Add the temperature gauge(s) as a separate item and have the best features of both.

Your 1979 motor should already have a telltale connected at the lower right hand fitting on the "bubbleback" exhaust housing. If you route the telltale hose to the top of the engine and back down to the outlet, there is no real need to changie the rest of the setup.

OK, guys iwombat, has completed his faq. it is a stick at the top of the page, and will go to the faq in a couple of weeks. if you have questions about the faq, or your praticular motor, start a new thread of your own. i'm closing this as it has performed it function as a research thread.
