Will you get it done before freeze up? Your trees seem still to be green and have leaves. Here they are brown and falling. Do you have a heated garage you can work in if it gets colder? Awesome job and great pics!

Thanks Wood, 4 bolts and the axle pulls right out. It made the cradle really stable with the least amount of work. It's also very nice being so low to climb in and out of.

Thanks SWD! You are on to me! I have been behind on the posting a bit, but I will get caught up in the next couple of days! My hopes were to have the transom in the stringers in and the deck in and completed before colder weather comes. Then i could set the cap back on put the axle back under it and cover it up till spring. However last weekend was in the 50's and I found that fiberglass does not like to kick that cold, but I had already made the executive decision to go for it and bought a second 5 gallon bucket of resin knowing it has to be used because of the shelf life.

I do have a garage with a heater but it is attached to the house and I really didn't want to go there if I didn't have to. The admiral's car would have to go outside, and I don't think it has ever had morning frost on it, not to mention the Polyester resin stink in the house.

I was hoping the weather would hold out a bit longer but oh well!

So here is what I came up with last weekend! This is a short term solution to get the strings and the deck glassed in. This is my fiberglassing easy bake oven!!! This is a 30,000 btu LP reddy heater blowing through a piece of 8" insulated chimney liner, left over from my chimney rebuild, blowing under the hull. Works like a charm. The only thing I had to buy was a $59 tarp. I had everything else. Oh ya and a indoor outdoor thermometer so I could regulate the temp.

In is the outside temp and out is the temp inside the hull. I put the thermometer receiver inside the boat. When the temp reached 75 I shut the heater off. When the temp got down to 70 I started the heater. It's extra messing around, but the glass kicked and I was a happy camper!

That last post puts me ahead of my self so time to go back and bring the project up to date completely. The Stringers are built.
The main stringer took some time to get it done. It is about 12" tall toward the front and 15 or 16 feet long. I used 3/4 arauco ply, and glued it together with titebond III, and screwed it with triple dipped deck screws. The other 4 stringers were smaller and less time consuming. All of them were then wetted out in resin and then wrapped in csm.

The 2x4's are my reference points to the sole!

Ok now the up to date pic from Tuesday it was upper sixties and I bedded in the two stringers left and right of center in PB inside the easy bake over.

Thanks WOG and JB! I have been thinking that I should use 3/4" for the deck. Is there a good reason why I shouldn't? Or is it just not neccessary if 1/2" is csm'd on both sides with a single layer of 1708 biax on the top?

Thanks!

Just finnish reading the thread. Your doing a fantastic job.
Most of the gentlemen here like the 3/4" ply because how strong it feels. I am using the 1/2" but my bulkheads or on 16" centers.

I just can't beleive that the confussed tiny jasoutside has offered to grind on a glass boat. (LOL) :D:eek::facepalm:
Jasoutside is a great guy all kidding aside.

Based on this interior pix:
DCP_1560.jpg

It would appear that there will be minimal impact to using 3/4" deck plywood, particularly if it's available in 1 of the preferred choices. Aurauco, douglas fir or MDO ply. You will loose 1/4" of the height difference between the seat & bottom of the steering wheel. If you were able to salvage any of the interior side trim pieces, they will need to be adjusted. If you saved just the vinyl for patterns for the interior side trim, it will also need to be adjusted.

There will be additional weight & cost involved w/ using the 3/4". But sometimes that is a stock item & is cheaper per sheet then 5/8" or 1/2" because they are special order items.

If the distance between your stingers is less then 24" (appears to be for the center & outer, but approaching 24"+/- to the outside chine) you may find 5/8" is a nice alternative to either 1/2" or 3/4". Lighter weight during construction & after installation then 3/4", thicker (stiffer~more rigid) then 1/2", and in some cases the extra 1/8" won't affect interior trim height as much. Depending on how you layout the interior & use the boat, 5/8" spanning 24" w/ poly resin & CSM on the backside, & resin, CSM, 1708, CSM and tabbing on the topside, may be sufficient.

If I could get Aurauco in both, I'd choose 5/8".

I'll be damn lucky to find it or Douglas Fir in 3/4" even on special order. I think I'll be using MDO for mine in 5/8" ($45+/- per 4X8 sheet) if available as a special order when I am ready. In my tin it wouldn't be much different, but in my FireFlite, the stringers are almost 3" wide (hollow fiberglass, NO stringer wood:D) and only @ 18" center to center, 15"+/- clear span. I can usually order 3/4" MDO ($55+/-) easily....

Thanks! Decker I appreciate that input! You do have major bulkheads. Well as far as jasoutside we have a problem because, although I could use the help, I called my insurance agent, and he told me if jas is on the property with a grinder in hand my policy is void. I asked why and he said that jas has a history of removing blade guards, and riskey behaviors, involving angle grinders, causing bodily injury. And even though jasoutside needs to satisfy his GLASS LUST we just can't risk it!!!

jbcurt00 I think I'll be using MDO for mine in 5/8"

Thanks JB I didn't think how the deck thickness will affect the sides and so on. I will have to see what sizes Menard's carries and go from there.

So grinders are certified usable on the property, and Jas is welcome to be on the property, the 2 just can't be w/in 10feet of each other? Like a restraining order? Cool, good to know :)

Menard's out Jas' way ALWAYS seems to have a good supply of 3/4", and its Aurauco I think. I can't recall him ever buying any other size.....

Yah, ok. I deserved that.

All right, no grinder. I'll just bring the Sawzall:D

Yup, plenty of 3/4 Arauco over at "The Nards".

Barn Door Lumber in Hemlock has it but they are closed on the weekends.

West Marine over in Bay City should have some on hand.

Pretty sure Bay Outboard won't.

Thanks GT and welcome aboard! I have been looking over my shoulder when I work. I've been expecting a mad man with a sawzall to rush in and cut her to ribbons!
