I was out on the water cruising and my drive gave out! Motor worked but prop stopped spinning.

Brought the boat home, hooked up the muffs and noticed water was not coming out of the exhaust and when I put the shifter in drive prop wasnt spinning.

I also noticed that the "drive oil resovoir" was very low almost empty!

How would I determine what damage was caused?

Ayuh,... Drain the drive, 'n inspect it's oil for water or metal....

Then pull the drive, 'n see what's up...

Sounds like you cooked the drive gear and driven gear. If its an alpha gen II pull the top dip stick and see if it reads any oil or if it has fragments on it. I would pull that whole top cover if it were me.

Heres a few images of a drive I just finished.

What about the possibility of bad coupling splines? or blown coupler? just my 2 cents.

Popping the top cover is the easiest (and quickest) to check... If that checks out, then further investigation is needed... But a coupler wouldn't deplete the drive oil monitor....

Just saying...I always start with the easiest/simplest things first...

The prop spins freely in neutral and when the throttle is pushed forward I spin the prop it ratchets one way and spins freely the other and when the throttle is in reverse vise versa!

No... In forward it should ratchet CW and LOCK CCW, and in reverse it should ratchet CCW and LOCK CW....

Time to pull the drive, split it and determine which half has lost the plot....

Re: Alpha one drive stopped working

The top cover needs to come off. If water is not getting circulated through the drive and out the exhaust then the driveshaft is not spinning. The only other way for this to happen is for either a blockage (which i doubt you have) or the keyway came off of the waterpump (again i doubt it). I am 99% sure your gears are paper weights. I got lucky on my and only had to rebuild the top. Ran me about $300.00. If you cant do the work yourself then get an SEI.

Pressure and vacuum test everything after you get it all back together. Better to be safe knowing nothing is leaking out/in than to run into this problem again.

Ayuh,.... The Alpha lower units with the o-ring at the top of the vertical shaft, are Known to shatter the shaft, at the o-ring groove too...

So,... That's Not the Only answer...
