i just installed a new lower drive and I started it up on the water hose and notice that where the upper and lower drive go together on the starboard side there is water that seeps out. When I was getting the other one off I did rough up the edge of the upper drive, but not bad at all. Is it just not sealing good? Another thing, should there be water trying to come out of there anyways? I got the water pump tube in place when reinstalling it. Since it is leaking will that in anyway get into the gear oil?

Ayuh,.. That whole cavity is Wet on both sides...

The leak yer seeing is probably the drain weephole...

I know where the weep hole and it wasnt coming from there. It was coming from where the units go together at. I just didn't know if it was something I should really worry about or not. Im almost certain it's because i accidentally roughed it up getting the old one off. Should I silicone around the outside? I also noticed the one I took off had know signs of a gasket on there. Is that normal?

I would try to smooth out where you mared it and if you need to use maybe 2 gaskets if its too mared up. I could be giving horrible advice though let someone else chime in on what I said. There are alot of really knowledgeable people on here.

Ayuh,... It's normal if the op didn't know that there's NO gasket in that location,....

It's naturally, 'n Normal that it's Wet on both sides of that casting, between the upper unit, 'n the lower unit...
NO gasket,...
No concern....
'n especially No Sillysealant...

so i shouldnt even worry about the leak? It wont some how get into the gear oil right?
thanks for all the help also and i know im asking a lot of questions, i just want to make sure that im not going to mess anything up.

Ayuh,... The Only gasket of any type between the 2 halfs is the Quad-ring, which isolates the oil, from water, within the 2 units...

Might want to pull the lower and check, it can cost you an outdrive when the drive is warm from running and the gear lube leaks out and the upper gears go bad from lack of oil. have seen it many times.

Do you have a remote drive oil reservoir? That has an alarm that if you left the quad ring out, it would alert you to the problem. Don't run it once the alarm sounds...

Doesn't matter, even with the reservoir. If on a run and the gear lube starts leaking out, due to pressure from the drive warming up. This pressure will keep the gravity feed reservoir from keeping the drive full.
I have replace 3 Gen II outdrives due to missing quad rings. The reservoir only feeds the drive during cool down and the cooling & gravity pulls the gear lube to the drive.

Hmmm, makes sense. You better check it.

Re: Alpha one Gen 2 outdrive

i installed the new lower drive and took it to the lake and i could only get it to do 30. My old unit with just me would about 44. It does shoot out of the hole great but the rpms are way to high, at one point i floored it and it shot up to almost 6000. The old unit would let it get to about 5200. I was told that the lower drive would not effect the gear ratio, so why is it slower and run at higher rpms?

Sounds like the drive might be a different ratio.

Re: Alpha one Gen 2 outdrive

ok i will, but i was told that the gear ratio wasnt determined by the lower drive so how could it be a different ratio? The way i took it was that i could get any alpha one gen 2 drive and it would be the same. Maybe i misunderstood. It was just the lower drive I replaced. Thanks for all the advice.

Whom ever told you this is sadly mistaken. There are indeed different ratio alpha one gen 2 drives.

ok i understand. well where do i find the ratio for the lower drive and what steps do i need to take to get it back to normal? It currently has a 4 blade 20 pitch prop right now. My bro who has the same outdrive and has a 4 blade 22 pitch that im gonna try. It was also on here where i was told the ratio didnt matter with the lower drive.
