Re: Aluminum v hull restoration, how-to's? Lmuss53's 171CC Sea Nymph Striper

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm making a list of hardware and paint and I'm gonna take it to the True Value H'ware (my bad I said Ace yesterday) guy here in town and see what he can do for me. He is actually the proprietor of what was once the "company store" here in town, and only recently affiliated with True Value.

Here's one I could really use some help on. Does anyone know where I might find about 7 or 8 feet of the extruded angle with the lip for a cover like they put around the inside of the gunwale on this Nymph? I don't want to replace all that trim, but I don't want my new sections in the stern to be different. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

In my searches I did find a company that makes that alum channel you are looking for but the shipping would be silly $$.

Check in with your local fab shop, I'm sure they could whip something together for ya.

Lowe's actually has a decent selection of aluminum angle and flat stock in up to 8' lengths.

yup, they sell flat aluminum stock in various thicknesses and widths too, HD also. they also have a pretty good selection of SS hardware (blocks, pulleys, clips, clamps, screws, bolts, etc...) and rope. the more I hunt at the big box stores, the more things I can find to use on the boat. I wish they sold quality epoxy/f'glass supplies, but you can get pretty much everything else you need to rebuild a boat there. most of them in my neck of the woods even carry 3M 5200 and other marine specific products, but that may be because i'm in FL. while the big box stores aren't always ideal and they may not always have exactly what you were looking for, they usually have something close, and sometime it's all you have access too when/if a boat store isn't near by. keep us posted. we love pics.

Bros, I think that Imuss is actually looking for trim that has shape/contour to it vs. the basic flat/angle stock. I think anyway....

That about right Imuss?

jas is right I'm looking for an extrusion. it is the trim angle with a lip on it to retain a cover. I will put up a pic as soon as I get a chance to grab one. Old man Winter is threatening to wake up tonight, so we might get some snow. If we do it will be our first real shot since last year. Ive shoveled for about ten minutes so far this year, now they are talking about snowblower type accumulation. Lucky us.

Edit: added picture

Yah, I can't imagine anybody stocking such an animal. I'd check in with your local fab shop to see what they can do.

I'm gonna put running the cupped wire wheel on the 4" grinder right up there with drilling out rivets for being a @#$%$% job. Fortunately I got a late start, so I only had about an hour or so of it. I found some corrosion on the transom like most guys have found, I expect to clean it all up and JB weld it or use the tubes of that epoxy aluminum repair stuff I have here. I need to mix some of that up and see how it sets. No pic of the corrosion just one of the partly wire wheeled stuff. The wheel I have is a 2 inch and it is about shot, so I will get a new one in the bigger size and hopefully it will be easier to handle, but probably not. I tried a new flapper disc but that was a bit too agressive for cleaning with.

I hope to get the transom cut and sealed this week and get the old console out of the garage next weekend, so I have some room to move around. I sold the console for just about enough money to cover my vinyl and glue. I've got to meet the guy at the Outdoor show in Harrisburg to deliver it. My little propane salamander heater did a fine job this afternoon. I only ran it about 30 minutes and the garage was good and warm for the couple of hours I spent there.

One foot in front of the other, I will make this statement here though. I am going away for a week in April, this boat will be ready to fish from before then.

Lar,

For all my aluminum cleaning I used roloc scotchbrite pads on 3" roloc holder in right angle die grinder. McCarr again. Try Tumac in the 'Burgh for the rail extrusion. thats the co that made the covers on the Starcraft

I ordered my hardware this evening from Jamestown Distributors, they were right around HALF the price of what everyone else wanted for the 316 SS screws with $5 shipping if you enter the code "flat5".

I hope to post pics of a sealed up transom Sunday evening.

I had Brother Mike to help today and we spent about 6 or 7 hours in the garage, cutting templates, measuring, re-cutting, test fitting, re-cutting and on and on. However, I am happy to report that there is a transom, and both of the big bottom deck pieces, cut, screwed, glued, fitted, proofed out and with the first coat of Rustoleum polyurethane on them sitting in the garage drying right now. We goosed the heat up to 70 for about the last 2 hours and hopefully everything will cure. I'll give them a second and third coat this week and the floor decks will be ready for carpet.

I did say carpet there, I was going to go with vinyl, but I got a super deal on very good outdoor carpet from a friend's work and could not pass it up. He has used it in several boats and it is holding up well. I may still go with a piece of vinyl on the cockpit deck, but I'll decide later.

Transom on saw horses, center deck section at bow and foreward deck section up on cardboard on boat.
You can see the "C" side of a sheet of Auruco ply in the deck section, the transom side showing is an "A" side.

Transom screwed together with SS screws and liquid nails. It also has the only clamp I own on it, and first coat of sealer on. I'm going to wait for the transom glue to cure and drop it back in to trace the cutout for the motor to sit on.

Well we have a couple of more coats of poly on everything and the helm ready to bolt in the console. I got a controller in trade as part of the CC console deal that is much nicer than I expected, so I am going to use it mounted below the gunwale. I will not be threading the old motor harness up into the console, or mounting the CC shifter in the console, as I had planned to do. I will run wires and put the kill switch lanyard in the spot for the ignition switch on the console.

My carpet is at my brother's and will be here tomorrow.

We also took the extruded aluminum angle off and will look into replacing it with 1x1 aluminum angle or something similar.

No pics, nothing much to show. I hope we get a few decent weather days next week, the boat needs to come out of the garage so I can clean it out to paint in.

I have pretty much settled on an off/creamy white hull with red up the sides and on the gunwales. The gunwales are not for certain yet, I may go with the hull white there. The same creamy white on the interior with red and gray speckles and gray carpet. I have not ruled out a section of Vinyl for the main cockpit area.

Im really interested in the motorwell part of your resto. I just got an 1986 191 striper and would love to modify it to get another foot of cockpit space. Do you ever ask youself " maybe i shouldnt have done that" Keep up the good work, it really helps guys like me taking on a similar project.

Thanks for following the thread srewedup. I haven't had any second thoughts about making the splash well smaller yet, but I am not to the point of putting it back together without that monster yet either. My engineer and I (brother Mike) have discussed it and I think we have a good plan for the new splashwell. I have also considered that the sides may not be stable enough with only the connection provided by the new rear deck, and I may have to run a brace made of something like 1/4 x 3" stainless flat stock beneath the rear deck and up the sides to tie the old support areas into the new deck. Stay tuned, we'll get to it eventually.

Re: Aluminum v hull restoration, how-to's? Lmuss53's 171CC Sea Nymph Striper

TODAY I SAVED A GLASSER.

I bought this little runabout 2 years ago to pull the motor off of it. It was abandoned at a storage place and I got it with the trailer on a bill of sale only transaction, no titles. I was able to get a title for the trailer, and it will be the trailer for my Sea Nymph. My original intention was to take the hull to a landfill or burn it, but I decided to see if anyone would take it off my hands without a title. I posted it on a local classifieds page late last night, "free to a good home" and if I would have had 12 boats I could have given them all away today. I got at least 20 responses. My frank description scared the first caller, but I gave it to the second caller and just got back from running it up to Punxy for the guy. It probably cost me more in gas to run it to Punxy than the $40 the landfill would charge to take it, but I'm glad someone has it who will try to refloat it. I have a picture of the apparently happy new owner posing next to it, but I'm not sure he would appreciate being put up on this public forum so I won't post it.

The galvanized trailer is in like new condition, no signs of wear on any roller except the one at the winch, which is shot. Weren't there some issues about aluminum hulls on roller trailers? I could change it over to bunks, but it seems a shame to do that if I don't need to. Pics of the new trailer tomorrow.

Personally I like bunks better than rollers,........

However, As long as the rollers contact the flat part of the bottom of the boat instead of the strakes you should be fine,...

Here's the trailer, it seems like a lot of rollers on the bottom of the hull, a couple of carpeted 2x6's would be a lot simpler. I do want to use the galvanized trailer though, it is in excellent shape. I guess the thing to do is get the old trailer out from under the hull and see how this one fits.

New owner of Red Boat is serious about getting it back in the water. He and Brother Mike seem to have made a deal for Mike to sell him an old Larson he has so the guy can put the Red Boat on the trailer and pull the 120hp GM "iron duke" inline 4 out to run a generator with. Sadly the lower unit on the Mercruiser is shot and the Larson will probably go the way of all glass. :(

That's a nice looking trailer there. Yah, pop your rig on and you should quickly know if the rollers can stay or a swap to bunks is in order.

I'm not typically a fan of roller trailers (partly just because I have no experience with them) but that one looks to be decently set up and the rollers in good shape. I'd certainly try it out before converting it.
