Re: Aluminum v hull restoration, how-to's? Lmuss53's 171CC Sea Nymph Striper

Thanks for the input guys, the reason I'm hesitant to use it is I have never had one either. There are two chines (I think they are called) running the length of the boat on the bottom. The current bunks contact the hull between these things and the keel. To make the roller trailer work it will have to contact the hull in the same area. I guess I'll give it a try as is, if it works great, if not I'll put bunks on and sell the rollers.

OK different subject. The selection of color on the regular Rusto is pretty limited. There is a Regal Red in the Rusto Professional that looks good. Does anyone know the difference or have any experience with the Rusto Pro? It is also going to be tough to find a Rusto product that is an off-white or creamy color. The lady at the local True Value poo-pooed the idea of adding color or mixing some Almond in to change the color a little. Any suggestions?

Well, here's my opinion...

I personally like using the Rusto as when I get scratches n stuff, I can just grab something off the shelf and touch up as needed. Cheap and easy! But, if you tint, not so much, eh.

I'm replying for the third time to this, once the phone dumped it in the mist and once the PC.

I guess the thing to do if I want to use Rusto is to pick some colors and get on with it. I think Light Machine Gray and the Regal Red will do just fine for exterior colors and the gray, or white with gray speckles on the inside with gray carpet.

I also saw this today on the way to work, pretty straight forward if bunks become the way to go. I took a bunch of pics of the hardware they used on the bunks.

Mine had roller bunks on it. Converted to regular.

Thanks for the pics fellas, looks pretty easy. If the rollers don't fit real nice they will take the trip. EZ I don't know which hull that is right there upside down, but that's how the bottom of the SN is configured too.

A quick question for you regarding your flooring. You said you were useing the arauco plywood. what thickness did you go with . Menards has the MG on sale now for $45/60 . im thinking 1/2 inch because Sea Nymphs have a pretty good stringer system. Hopefully I'll be starting to work on mine this weekend so I'll be starting my own thread. Good luck with your boat, springs coming !

I used auruco 1/2 for the decks. $29 at altoona pa Lowes. It seems plenty solid layed out but not screwed down. I will put blue foam and noodles all the way up tight against the decks. 3/4 for the transom was $39. I personally can't see laying out the extra $ for marine grade, but that's just one guy's opinion.

So today I started putting stuff back in. The transom is done and back in the boat, with a 1/8 inch outer (facing in?) skin from a sheet of fiberglass locally manufactured, similar to shower enclosure. I spray glued it on in place of the aluminum skin that was behind the old splashwell. The old skin was shot and didn't cover the whole transom, and I needed something a little thicker than the .060 aluminum sheet. I'll paint it along with the other interior panels, and time will tell if this was a good or bad idea. I took the flapper wheel to it for about 1 minute to trim the edges back and that was plenty of glass grinding for me.

Tomorrow I am going to cheat a little and take the boat to a local truck body place and have them build a new 10 inch taller base for the Tracker console, finish the gunwales back to the new transom skin, filling in where the old splashwell was, and make a shiny new transom cap. I want the boat to look nice and I know the limits of my skills, so off to a pro it goes for a little work.

When I get it back I think we go to interior paint, then out to flip it for outside paint, then onto the new trailer and back in for interior finishing. I am already committed to working March 24, and 31, but I have scheduled vacation for every Friday in April to get me out of Saturday and Sunday OT, it's time to finish this boat and get Striper fishing.

I had planned to sell the other trailer but one of my co-workers has a Starcraft of some sort sitting in a field. The trailer is rusted out from under it, the insides are rotted out and all he knows about it is that it has a walk through windshield, is 17 feet long, and had a 65 Johnson on it at one time. The motor sheered some sort of flywheel key and they pulled the boat in the field and haven't been back. He said he'd sell it to me for the scrap price. Maybe I'll just hang on to this other trailer for a while. :D ;)

The fab guy is backed up until April 1, so it looks like I will keep going on my own. He gave me some pointers, and I will try to do the console and gunwales myself.

April isn't that far off,......

Are there other things that need to be done that can be done to allow the time to get it in??

He is going to do the cap, and he convinced me to do the gunwales myself, and to take a shot at a plywood console. If it looks like I can't get it right I'll wait until the end of the month and let him do it then.

I also got call from another fabrication guy late tonight who has done a couple of Starcraft restos. He is layed off and wants to know if I'd like some help. I'm going to go talk to him in the morning.

Fab guy is full of ideas, and needs a motor for a 15 foot glasser he's doing. I have a line on a 48spl for him, so I guess I have a new helper.

I bought these hatch covers tonight, they are all aluminum, one needs a hinge the rest are good to go, I hope the carpet comes off easily.

These are going to make the interior layout a lot easier, I'll just lay them out on the decks where they fit, cut the holes and drop them in.

I may try to put two of them together to make a large lid for a port side rod locker.

Yeah, I started out with my typical lowballing for all but the broken one and then I thought "You're going to screw around and lose these." so I made the guy a fair offer on all of them and he took it.

That is the good news, the bad news is my transom cap has gone missing. It must have blown out on the road between fab guys' places, although I never thought it would. I am going to go over the route again and look for it but I'm afraid it's gone. I would have rather lost about anything except that. Fab guy 1 was real iffy about getting the channel to bend to the curve in that transom. Did anyone replace or fab a new cap, and if so how did you do it. I thought I saw someone do it recently but I can't find the thread. I have some ideas, but could sure use some guidance.

MichaelP fabs transom corners for Starcrafts. Not sure how similar yours is. His price is high but probably realistic since it's not like he's making hundreds of them and they are very nice. I whacked one of mine off on a dock last year and bought a replacement from him. Ebay is a source for used ones.
