Actually it was just slush on the surface as it was snowing.
But it's not uncommon for me to break through ice. If it's not paper thin, just make sure to use a sledge hammer to bust up the shoreline before launching. It's rough on your lower unit, transducers and anything else attached to the transom if you don't.
That ice looks kinda thin.
One local lake here it was froze pretty good one winter and I was after some trout.
Took the jon boat and removed the little merc off the back and started using a back and forth motion with said jon boat to break ice at the ramp enough to launch said jon boat and then put the little merc back on and would run up on the ice and wiggle back and forth till said ice would break and then move a little more and repeat said action till I got to open water.
Caught fish all day and ice was thin enough still when I returned to ramp to be able to load.
Had to break ice out of the rod eyes all day.
Man, that was a long time ago.
I've done the rocking the boat thing to get through the ice too. That time I even thought I was crazy.
Most of my friends and family think I'm nuts to be in a boat when it's barely above 20deg out and water temps are in the low 30's. To me it's just about getting the most out of the open water season.
