Re: Americans Killed on Hijacked Yacht

Oh, I'm plenty irritated  I was only asking were they stupid or heroes for going for it despite the risks?
I was thinking about a road trip to Nuevo Laredo, Mexico and handing out "Just Say No!" pamplets.
Will my certain death be mourned as a hero's death?

If you look at this from a risk/reward perspective they were stupid.

RISK: getting killed by pirates.

REWARD: ????

Risking your life is usually stupid.

Its a given the crew was going to be held hostage in horrible conditions for a large ransome for who knows how long w/o some intervention. Its seems a no win situation for them after capture.I think i would prefer action by any Navy to try a rescue or other intervention as opposed to that If it were me.

Hero is really the wrong word, buttttttt . . . Without this incident are we more or less likeley to to be motivated to do something? If nobody took this risk then the Pirates win and we don't have a problem. They get their corner of the ocean and we lose freedom on the high seas. Doesn't seem like a good alternative to me . . .

Understood, but I don't think I'm going to take my family to Nuevo Laredo to motivate the discussion. I don't think cruising off the Somalia Coast will be a motivating conversation starter, either.

Even with combat experience, I know how to weigh risk vs reward.

Its really hard for me to discuss this thread without politics involved......but it seems to me that these things would have been dealt with much quicker and much more effectively in say the mid eighties........there no politics........:D

Does anyone know their approximate location (LAT LON) when they were boarded? I've heard several times that pirate activity is occurring over an ever-increasing area around Somalia. I was just wondering how close in fact they were.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ships_attacked_by_Somali_pirates_in_2011

There's a list of the 2011 attacks by Somali Pirates, the last one on the list is the one discussed. Looks like according to that list there were 11 so far this year.

Location was unknown, 2-pirates killed, 2-found dead, 2-on a navy ship for negotiations, and 13 detained. So how many boats are 19 pirates in during an attack?

It's just madness

Look under the story for the TROMP. As well as many other reports on this page these idiots are even attacking military ships. It pirates are like cockroaches. They are everywhere. I wonder how many ships they have? There are several reports here of there mother ships being captured yet they still keep coming. There are also some reports of hefty ransoms being paid. I guess there is an element of risk/reward for the pirates.

They are no better then common murderers and terrorists and should be dealt with in the same fashion, a bullet or a noose, that should be their only risk /reward

Re: Americans Killed on Hijacked Yacht

I watched a show last night on tv about pirates and the navy. They do have special units that are anti piracy units out there takin these guys out ! It was really cool to see how they did it.Had this one little skif runnin for friendly waters ( at least for them ).Then the navy shot some warning shots across the bow with the 50 cal.Didn't affect the pirates at all because they knew the navy would not open fire directly at them.So the captain of the navy warship thought of a solution ! He ran the ship around the pirates until it flooded both their outboards ! It was awesome to see that little skif full of pirates bouncing around on 10-15 foot wake from the ship! Needless to say they gave up quick ! There are also pirate mother ships supporting the skifs the pirates are using ! Mostly it was stolen ships and other times it was rusty roach, rat infested scrapped together pieces of crap! They said they hadn't caught one until now (?) whenever that was !Ther were about 15-20 pirates aboard that one little boat with rpg's,ak's you name it they had it ! I for one am glad they are out ther fighting this crap I know they can't get em all,but what they are doing helps !

Let's face it piracy has been a fact of life for quite some time and it's not limited to ocean and boats and Somalia. Some boats have been seen drifting by the Florida coast a decade or so ago and owners were never to be seen alive. RV travellers in Mexico have been shot at, (as reported on TV) and RV'er I personaly know have been warned by local Nevada police that they could not cross the nevada desert at dark unless they had a convoy and weapons.

I'm not at all familiar with the laws of international sea travel but aren't you checked at ports (and sometimes on the water) for weapons/drugs etc? Are you allowed to carry a certain level of protection onboard and does that amount vary between international waters and waters governed by certain nations? Especially ones that forbid the possession of firearms?

If so, what is allowed? Pistol? AK-47? 5" cannons?

The Somali Pirates (sound's almost like a baseball team) hunt in groups of a dozen or more. They carry RPG's, machine guns etc.

One cannot protect your own small ship from these, go-getters.

Fire on them and they will kill you and shink your ship, without even missing lunch.

Heroes or idiots? Who's to say? Maybe a bit of both.

It seems that if they were reasonable and thought there was THAT high a risk they would have decided differently. That is to say, they might have either thought they could get by or didn't understand how bad the area is.

A lot of stuff we get wrapped up in is important but, frankly, not worth dying over. Some stuff is. The ability to know the difference is I think where wisdom comes in. If they thought it was worth dying over then kudos to them to going out with their boots on.

Re: Americans Killed on Hijacked Yacht

Maybe the ships could just carry lots and lots of money and the Pirates could just set up giant floating booths, and take the money, each time the captive ships come through - sort of like a toll road, if you will. ;)

Easy pass maybe? ;)
