Re: Amsoil Saber at 50:1 mix ratio ??
I don't want to see any oil "war" here, and if there is, I'll delete the whole thread..NOW, with that out of the way, obviously some people are more of a certain brand-lover than another.
I do believe, however, that IF the oil is labeled as being a TC-W3 CERTIFIED oil, it will not hurt anything in a carbed 2-stroke outboard that is ran near or with-in reason of the manufacturers specs.
There ARE situations where some synthetics are better than dino oil...one is extended low RPM...the other is extended high RPM WELL above the manufacture's specs.
A few years back (about 2 boards ago) While testing props, I also ran several different brands of oil in my carbed, slightly modified 200 'Rude.
There IS a difference in how these oils performed, but not a difference where you may think. My problem was excessive amounts of "extra" oil at Idle with some, which caused leaking on the floor spots later. All of the synthetics I tested showed a very slight increase in RPM-maybe 25-30.
Engine damage???...I don't think any of them were run long enough to have any data for that, but some did smoke more than others. Comp checks after every day were basically with-in a pound in every cylinder...once in a while I might have one a few lbs low, or even high....normal in my book.
Right now I run what several here consider junk...the HPI Amsoil.
My engine is set-up to run well over 7500RPM although those are short periods of time, I've had no issues in about 500hrs with this oil.
Would I tell you to run it even though it's not "actually" TC-W3 rated? I'd say yes....if you choose to do so. Would I tell you to run Fred's brand of std Dino that is TC-W3 rated in the carbed engines? Yes...because it passed the standards by which the oil is tested for TC-W3 certification.
Yet I still believe there are better and best oils out there, rest assured it's "GOOD enough" if it's TC-W3 rated(for carbed 2-stroke outboards).
If it's not TC-W3 rated (Certified), you better trust that manufacturer's oil, period.
