Re: Another one...Upholstery

So today I broke my shop....left this huge hole in it!

then someone fixed it

Just couldn't get all the boats through the 7.5" double glass door, so I added a 12' Garage door....got the garage door, at a garage sale (go figure) for 150 bucks, then 60 bucks in wood to frame it....so not bad added a 12' door to my shop for 210 bucks!

My first test try had this vinyl for pratice I cannot get the corners any good but will keep practicing. This is going to be a armrest sooner or later. I have good gray vinyl that I will use when I get the corners better.

For corners, don't most upholstery shops have some pointed 'sticks' made out of something stiff enough to help get the corners pushed out, but not sharp enough to pierce the vinyl.

MRS: It looks kind of like you need to push the corner puckers out from the inside....

Re: Another one...Upholstery

square corners are tough, give the corners a slight curve and it will make it a little easier...if you must have 90 degree corners then you need to cut the "excess" off on the corners...i usually cut it at a 45 angle close to the stitch so the excess does not cause it to bunch

I really need a slight curve but when I tried it really bunches up. Will try again the more I sew the better it seems to get. Thanks for the reply...

on the curve, cut relief slits every 1/4-1/2 on the band to that it follows the curve, that will help it not bunch up as well...it is good to practice before doing it for real so by the time your ready you should have it figured out

Jb and JD, Thanks for the replys I will try cutting the reliefs and sewing on the curve. One more question do you use polyester or nylon thread? Thanks again for the info....

Polyester UVR Bonded, like Sungard or Solarfix....nylon is strong but breaks down in sunlight....use at least a v69, but I prefer v92 on marine applications

A square doesn't have any corners. That's why they call it a square ...

It does have right angles however. Don't waste your time trying to sew around a 90deg angle. It ain't gonna happen.

Do yourself a favor and add a radius. However small, it'll help. I keep an assortment of circular sh*t around the shop just for that purpose. From bottle caps to 5 gal bucket lids.

As has been mentioned 'relief' cuts in the material help, but if'n yer turning too tight a corner not always.

WOG at the Judges shop?! No good can come from that ... Heh heh heh
