haven't used canvas for seating yet, but don't see any problem there
Ain't no problem t'all. Try one, you'll wish people'd never heard of vinyl.

I'd make cushions outa Sunbrella all day long if folks'd let me. Cooler, longer lasting, just as waterproof, more so if you use Sunbrella Plus. And no more expensive than a good grade of vinyl.

Plus it's easier to sew & a lot more forgiving. Punch a needle into canvas where it don't belong, no big deal. But you do that with vinyl'n that hole's there forever.

Pickup Truck Bench seat I just finished

made the panels for seat and back at same time so everything would line up perfect

then made covers for both sections

a few hog rings and some swearing later....

I do not care for the layout personally, but it is how the customer wanted it, and thats all that matters

I actually have a question for both of you (v153, JD) as I have an idea on something I want to do with my boat. What type and how would you use clear vinyl to make Piping/welting for when making seating? I want to use clear for the welting because I have a surprise use for it and want to see if it works. Or would you not try that at all?

You would need to find some clear cording and then use clear thread and clear vinyl. But if the seats are Clear, how would you find them to know where to sit!!!!

WOG would use white thread clear vinyl and not use cording for the center but side glow Fiber Optic cable. I mainly wanted to see what vinyl is thought to be best used for this purpose.

WOG yeah I have a source hoping V153 or JD will chime in with what the best mil thickness is for the purpose. Don't want it too thick because it is piping, and don't want it too thin that it cracks and breaks before the seats or the stitching wear out. Since V153 has used vinyl for car rear windows what has he found regarding that usage. Also want to make sure it doesn't yellow out in the sun.

Most vinyl windows are made from .030 material. As long as it has UV protectant in the film it should not yellow. Most Marine Grade vinyl has the UV protection. They may have better sources and facts so we'll see what they come up with.

Looking at the link you posted they have as thin as 6 gunge but they don't list UV protection until 20 Gauge. That's still pretty thick and need to see if it would round a 3-8mm core without too much issue.

Never used it but according to my calculations that's 1/8 to 3/8". I see no reason it would not. I use 32 oz vinyl on my seats and 3/16" cording on the piping so unless the clear is different and it might well be, it should work. But hey, I'm just an

so what do I know. Not sure but I don't think Judge has used the clear stuff yet. Purdy sure v153 has.

Interesting question for an equally interesting application. Imo the only product that would really hold up would be 'StrataGlas'.

I think 30ga would probly be way too heavy, means you would wind up with 60ga piping. And that probly ain't gonna wanna bend around the corners so good.

What is the diameter of the fiber optic cable?

That is an interesting concept, V153 would be the one to ask, I have not done much with clear vinyl, but fun idea, and may have to toy with that sometime!

Re: Another one...Upholstery

The beauty of StrataGlas is when bend it it doesn't distort the view. Unlike regular clear vinyl. This is 30ga StrataGlas in a set of T-Top curtains I installed this morning. Note the fwd curtain is fighting a couple of compound angles, particularly at the top, yet retains it's optical clarity.

Believe you can get SG in 20ga, that might work for piping but boy I bet it'd still be tough crankin it around any tight corners.

You can get Optic Cable from 3mm to 8mm and larger but I wouldn't want to go larger than 8mm. The site WOG posted the thinnest material they listed that was UV protected was 20 gauge. Basically distortion wouldn't be an issue since its just color coming out doesn't need to be completely clear just transluscent. So it would look a little different around corners and that's okay. Even something not totally clear like a frosted as long as the color can come through would be cool it would look white when the light is off and colored when its on. For my boat the colors are red white and blue so this would work great especially with red and blue high powered LEDs running it. I was thinking of ordering some samples and trying them out need to get the sewing machine out and cleaned up and running properly.

My main concerns in this is that the material last as long as the seats and/or stitching, will reap around the fiber optic core and the corners of the seats, not add too much extra thickness over standard welting, and not yellow or resist yellowing, drying, and cracking.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

glad to see someone else taking on the sewing....the box looks good, make sure once its all glued together take a 1/4 round bit and router and round all of those edges....keep us updated on the work and shoot any questions you might have at us.

BTW what kind of sewing machine did you get?
