Re: Another one...Upholstery

trimjobber is great, I used him when I first started out, just be sure to order more than you need because if you underestimate chances are he will not have more of the same color.

one of my favorites is Upholstery Fabric, Wholesale and Discount Auto, Marine, and Furniture Upholstery Fabrics they give everyday folks the same wholesale prices I get, and anything you order you can get more of if you miscalculate. they are based out of Washington state so shipping times are longer for me, but I prefer them. I have about 10 regularly used vendors and they get 70% of my business

Fun with foam....had to rebuild this car bench seats foam and springs, so I cut the 2" foam to fit the shape and added 1/2 foam over that smoother the edges...the seat cover also has 1/2" sew foam so makes a total of 3" of foam

This is the product I use to glue the foams together, you can get this in smaller size containers

Lay out the foam and fold it over, do half at a time

spray the adhesive on both pieces its contact adhesive so needs to be on both

12292012403.jpg

after you have the top glued, cut the corners and apply glue to both sides of the cut

12292012404.jpg

then pinch it together

12292012405.jpg

then its ready for a cover

This is the type of gun I use to spray the glue, they are 29 bucks at lowes, so use em til they stop working and throw it away...as long as you keep it closed, the glue will stay sprayable for a long time

Test fitting the panel before adding the band

Band added and prepping to hog ring

perty...I enjoyed the pleating lay out on this one, the colors are not my favorite, but it does not matter what I think as long as customer likes it

I have a vinyl question just got vinyl from cabelas marine vinyl. But no fuzzy backing on it seems like good thick vinyl, should it have the fuzzy backing on it or does it matter?

Re: Another one...Upholstery

no, it does not need the fuzzy backing, in fact most of the vinyl I use does not have fuzzy backing...if you feel the need for a lil exra padding sew 1/8 in sew foam on before covering it...thanks for the compliment

Woody:
I believe he is talking about the backing...some vinyls have this fuzzy cotton-like backing....

JW:
I use my bandsaw or an electric carving knife....i just haven't been able to justify the cost of a foam cutter (electric carving knife with a plate)

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Hey Judge very nice stuff! Question for you. What is the name of the plastic stripping that's used to anchor edges on upholstery? I am copying the original interior on my boat and found it used on some of the straight shots where colors change. In my sunpad there are 4 pads that are butted up against each other and the stripping is used between colors in there. It appears that it's there as both a hold down and to keep the lines straight.

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Just sew a strip of vinyl into the seam allowance for the tiedown and staple it down...it will work the same, and gives you somewhere to use scraps that don't work anywhere else

Re: Another one...Upholstery

Yes was talking about the backing does have backing just not the fuzzy stuff on it.
Now just need to practice sewing curves plus I keep sewing pieces together that I do not move out of the way.
But like they say practice makes better......
