the shift plate, the shift interrupter switch, maybe a pic of your "new throttle control". I am just fishing here. something that worked fine, then doesn't after you "bumped" the stuck control handle is a bit odd.

Here is a pic of the control and the shift plate. I know it's odd to me too.. that's why i started changing everything (except the new lower shift cable which appears to be in spec). The new control is the one that's on the boat. The old one is laid uninstalled and the other photo is of the shift plate and cables. As i said the only way i can get it to find reverse is by pulling the cable by hand and it seems like it takes alot of force to get to reverse...enough to engage the shift interrupter.

Ok.. pulled the lower to see if anything unusual.. it's pretty stiff to turn the lower shift piece to lock into reverse but it turns into forward pretty good.. just turning by finger. Then i put it back on and pull the shift cable but would not find reverse. I can reach between the lower and upper unit and turn the shaft by hand and it will lock into reverse but it's very hard to get it to lock in.

The shifting should not be hard on the drive. Does it make it easier if you turn the prop while going into reverse?

If you didn't turn while shifting, then the dogs may not be engaging and that's why the shift cutout switch is being activated.

Sorry i didn't put that.. i did have someone rotating it, and then i had them pull out on the cable while i rotated. it feels like the dogs just didn't want to engage in reverse until i stuck my finger between the upper and lower and pushed it hard with my finger to rotate it on around. i got a steal on a lower that just had new seals and impeller because i'm going to turn mine in for a core (once i ensure the one i ordered is in good working condition).

If this does, or doesn't fix my issue i'll be sure to let you guys know.

Thanks

It made it a little easier but i could feel the shaft like it was almost fighting going in gear, then it'd finally lock in.

that shift plate hardware looks pretty rusted and funky. I would clean up those anchor posts.

does the shift cable core slide like butter when disconnected ? the cable routing looks pretty tight under that exhaust bend.

this link is not exactly your problem, but it details shift cable adjustment and words of wisdom from DonS. "You must have done something wrong.....or it would work."

I read through it and went back and checked everything.. all appears right. i followed it all in order. If this new lower unit i ordered doesn't fix it then i'm just at a loss of what it is. I did change the cable routing though to go over top of my exhaust and it's a lot smoother bend. I'll advise once i get the new lower in and installed.

Thanks for all the help guys.

I had the no reverse problem and it was to much grease on the shifter slide in lower unit. It took a few trips out before all the grease got packed into the slot and it would not go back far enough to shift to reverse. Just my 2 cents.
