I bought a webbcraft boat with a 260hp 350 around a 1982 I believe over the winter months. Started it when I bought it it was almost 32 degrees I believe if not a little colder I checke oil before and after I heard it run and everything looked great. After that we put muffs back on it and had a hose connection the muffs to a funnel and poured antifreeze in her while running untill it came out the exhaust. When it warmed up we got her out and put the muffs on her and let the water run for about 2-5 mins before we actually started it. Went to change the oil after letting it run for 20-30 mins at idle and a few revs I noticed there was a lot of water in the oil.... Well I changed oil and run it again in a 55 gallon bucket cut in half run another 30 mins and nothing. Did this 3-4 more times over a month or so and I could never get water on the oil again. Didn't run hot or over heat and started great. So we chanced it and took it out on the river. For the first 30 mins it did great we stopped to swim and drink a few beers and the boat was hard to start back. Had to idle her up and hurry up and put it in gear so it wouldn't die. Problem got worse the longer we were out untill it wouldn't start at all.

Got home pulled plugs they didn't look to bad and took all the bolts out of the manifolds and was able to see down in them to see of there was water in them and nothing. No signs of rust inside the exhaust runners. Now I'm stumped. Runs great at high rpms and no water that I could see on the exhaust runners..... Any ideas what to do next????

Read throught your comments three times and I thenk I have most of what your saying. With it running on muffs you found a lot of water in the oil. Changed the oil and run it using a 55 gallon bucket cut in half (27.5 gallon) for 30 minutes and no probems. Put boat in water and ran for 30 minutes and again no issues. Boat set floating for a while and had difficulity restarting and after a short time woud not restart. No problem with plugs and your not seeing water in the exhaust runners.

This is my WAG - You said its not over heating but it sounds like it is and there could be more problems. Boat wound up with water in the oil when it was run on muffs. Muffs uses pressure which can force water past raw water pump. Running the boat in a bucket or in the river requires the raw water pump to work and pump the water through the engine. Are you sure the raw water pump is working? If its not you may have a cracked block.

I'm typing all this from a iPhone do please forgive spelling and a few wrong words. Your exactally right about what is going on. No over heating at all. I'm a car guy. Do the only way I know to checked for a cracked block is to tear into it. So now I'm gonna put a old school water neck on her and install a radiator an use my radiator pressure tester and do a pressure test. I'm expecting to hear air leaking somewhere inside it. By doing this I figure I can eliminate the exhaust side of the cooling system and concentrate on the block heads intake ect. Don't want to throw parts at something unless im 100 percent sure. Doing it this way might be a little work but hopefully it produces results.

And what's the raw water pump?

If you have an Alpha drive it is in the outdrive, It you have a Bravo its belt driven and it is on the front left side of the engine facing it.. I'm going to guess you have an Alplha drive. The raw water pump brings in the water from the lake/river/muffs and pushs it to the circulating water pump as in a car.

On the bright side I just pulled a motor out of a boat that had a hole in the haul. Gonna do a compression test, put a hei Dist with headers and radiator and run it make sure it don't over heat and no cracked blocks and try it again.

Re: Another water in oil thread Won't idle In water after a hour

sorry to see this. I owned my boat 1 month before I cracked my block. When I winterized, I had no idea how much water needed to exit the block as i'd never winterized 1 before. I pulled the drain plugs and it gave me about a cup on both sides of block. Without a reference to qty, I wrongly assumed that's all there was in there. The block had sludge in there that was blocking the drain.

I've now 200 hrs on the new block. Yay :(
