aha! A virtual Florence Nightingale in disguise! :p
Hey, is 7.35 kb/sec to 7.9kb/sec a normal download speed? Seems awful slow. I've never paid attention to the speed before, but it seems like the little paper always flew a lot faster.

Comcast cable. It shows a connection speed of 100.0 Mbps. I've been at it now for 20 or so minutes and it has only done 2%

Also, Xcusme, what kind of program will I need to get on the internet with Linux?

Edit: Hmmm! The download box just went away. Was D/L'ing it to my desktop and there is no sign of it. It couldn't have been past 15% when it disappeared

The 100Mbs is the NIC (network Interface Card). Depending on your area, you should see d/l's in the 300K-400K range. That server is probably slow. It shouldn't take more than 30 or so minutes to d/l.

When you get it going, look an application called Konqueror (web browser), there's an icon for it.

Jesus!! That's a really slow site. I just tried d/ling the file and I got 6.5K/sec. Let me see if I can run down a faster site. BRB...

Okay on Konqueror. I just restarted the KNOPPIX Download. It's running at 216 kb/sec and climbing. Thanks!

Depends....depends on the manufacturer of your computer. Usually, pressing the Escape key or the Delete key when you first boot up will take you into the Bios setup screens. Some computers, it's F10, F2,F1 , you get the idea....

Re: Any Linux users?

What an ordeal. 4 hours later I finally have Linux downloaded and burned onto a CD. Two protracted attempts at download and two protracted attempts to burn it from the harddrive, using Nero burning rom. Everything just kept locking up when I tried to burn it.

Even in the end I never got a 'finished' message on Nero. I had to hit the master power button to shut the computer off and get the burned CD out. But after reboot, Windows explore shows the program is on the CD.

Unlike Xcusme, I've reached my limit for the nite. It's time for beddy bye. I'll try to boot into Linux tomorrow and give a report.

Re: Any Linux users?

I have a regular Knoppix cd that I bought some time ago and when I boot up on it and open a browser and type in a website name such as iboats, it says website not found.

Did this with several different places and it says the same thing.

Opened up another browser that is on there and get the same thing.

Is there a way to update Knoppix?

I used to run a neat linux based program (utility,if you will) named "pitou"........ran off a bootable floppy........those were the good old days. did not even need a hard drive in the puter.

Re: Any Linux users?

Elmer, Xcusme would probably be best to answer your questions, but word has it that he stays up all night working on computers, so we probably won't hear from him till just before dinner. :p

In the meanwhile, running Linux from the KNOPPIX CD apparently makes you invulnerable to all things that would need to write back to your operating system. They can't write to the Linux OS, operating from a CD.

Also, the D/L'd Linux has a built in link to a web browser.

I'll be trying my downloaded copy later today.
