Re: Any Linux users?

Ok, Xcusme. It just plain don't fly. I reset my bios to look at the CD first but it just boots right up into Windows. I did verify the bios setting and the CD does show the whole ISO file.

Am I missin sumpin or should I just turn this CD into a Frisbee? :p

Also, I missed your post, last night, when you got back with a faster download site. I see one of the options was ver 3.7. Maybe I should have downloaded that one? Even when I re-tried the original site, it took about 45 min's at 215 k/sec.

Re: Any Linux users?

Boomyal, you have 2 cd drives?
The reason I ask is that in bios my regular cd rom is what's there and not the cd-rw drive so I had to put the cd in the regular drive.

SBN, my bios plainly states the model of CD. But I did go back and stick the disc in the other one, just in case. Same thing happened. Zilch!

Oh Xcusme, it's time to wake up now! :D

Certainly not a life or death issue as have been some of my other delimmas but now that I have invested all this time it would be fun if I got to see the much vaunted Linux.

Re: Any Linux users?

Boomyal,
You said "I did verify the bios setting and the CD does show the whole ISO file."

Is there only one file (the xxxx.iso) on the cd you burned?? If the answer is yes, you burned it wrong.

Nero destructions:

Version 5.x

1. Launch Nero.
2. Choose File, Burn Image and you'll be presented with a dialog box.
3. Click on the Files of type: dropdown box and select All Files (*.*).
4. Select the .ISO file you downloaded then press Open.
5. Next, Nero will show another dialog box of CD burning options. Accept the defaults:
* Type of Image: Data Mode 1
* Block size (Bytes): 2048
* Image header (Bytes): 0
* Image trailer (Bytes): 0)
6. Choose OK.
7. The Write CD dialog box should appear next.
8. Make sure Write, Finalize CD, and Disc-At-Once are checked, then choose Write.

Tips:

*

You must use the “Finalize CD” and “Disc-At-Once” option in Nero, or you will get the error: "FATAL ERROR: Installation of side by side assemblies failed" during setup.
*

You must specify *.* for the file type to see the .ISO file.

Version 6.x

1. Launch Nero.
2. Choose Recorder / Burn image
3. Browse to the location of the ISO file and select the ISO file you want to burn to cd/dvd
4. Check the option "Finalize CD (No further writing possible!)
5. Click on "Burn" now.

Re: Any Linux users?

yes, I double checked on the bios and this is all that is showing on the CD that I burned.

KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-EN.iso

I'm using Nero Express 6.0, when I select the Knoppix iso file off of my desktop (where I downloaded it to) this is what is added for burning.

KNOPPIX_V3.6-2004-08-16-EN.iso

I see no 'disc at once option' but finalize is checked. What else should I see on the burned disc and where does it come from?

Re: Any Linux users?

OK, you made a CD with the iso file on it, but, it won't boot.

Run Nero
On top menu, find Burn Image
On right side window, browse and find the xxx.iso file
Drag xxx.iso file to left side
Burn the CD. If another option window pops up, be sure finalize CD is checked (same as no multisession)

After you burn the CD, launch Windows Explorer, goto the cdrom drives. You should see the Knoppix CD with folders and files. Shut down Windows and boot your computer to run it.

Re: Any Linux users?

Hmmm! When in Windows Explore, I try to expand the the cd drive showing 'my disc' When I click on the + box the box just goes away with no contents displayed. It does show the iso file with 716,306 kb's in the right side of Explore but it does not show as a yellow file folder. It has a little box with a red and green dot as the files symbol.

Re: Any Linux users?

Yes, that won't work....
Take that CD and carefully place it in safe place for future use. You have to burn a new CD. Using your Nero, Nero will expand the contents of the iso file into files and folders and burn them to a new CD.

As I stated above, run Nero, pick File from top menu, find Burn Image .
Note: it's been awhile since I last used Nero (I use Alcohol-120) so if I'm off a bit on the destructions and menu selections, forgive me. The main idea here is to tell Nero that you want to burn an image file (that's your iso file) to a cd. What you will end up with is a cd with files and folders on it (Bootable Knoppix CD)

I'll see if I can find a website with better details on how to burn an iso with Nero.

OK, read #5 on this page...
FAQ

Re: Any Linux users?

Hokay! Reburned the disc. I did find the 'disk at once' option and selected it. Unlike last time, the burn went quickly and gave me a 'successfully finished' message. Had none of the lock ups that I had last night.

....however, same result on the cd. I have the iso file with no folders or files. Don't know if it's worthy to note but the downloaded Knoppix iso on my desktop also does not have any folders or files displayed under it.

Could I have a problem with the download? I think it stated that it was supposed to expand on the fly.

SBN, I hope this is your question. You may have to goto into the configuration of Knoppix for your Ethernet adaptor. I don't know if your setup with a static IP or DHCP.

I d/l'd version 3.4 of Knoppix last night. I can burn the image to cd and see what you're running into , if need be.

Re: Any Linux users?

OK, good. As I said, looking at the config of your ethernet adaptor would be the answer. You're soooo close, don't give up now. Knoppix should have a section to modify the ethernet adaptor.

Typical settings with Linksys router:

Give yourself a static IP address
192.168.1.45

subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Gateway (router) 192.168.1.1

Re: Any Linux users?

Voila!!!! The misunderstood link, here, was 'burn as image'. I was simply trying to burn it as a 'data file'. Now when I display the disc contents, in WE, I have the following folders:

Boot
Demo
Knoppix
Plus a few assorted other files.

Being as I have a very limited tolerance for this kind of stuff, (be dead in the water without Xcusme) I will wait until tomorrow to try to booting to Linux.

Thanks Xcusme. Like I've always said, when it comes to computers, tell me ten things and I'll grasp one. Tell me a hundred things and I'll end up knowing ten. That is sufficient for my family to think I am a computer genius. ;)

Good luck to you SBN.
