Re: Any Linux users?

I have used Nero and Easy CD Creator to burn .iso to disk but have recently discovered a small stand alone program that does it so much faster and better.... and it's free. It's called ISOrecorder. You can find it online or if you desire, email me and I'll send it to you ... it's a .zip file only 536KB. I used it to burn the Knoppix .iso and it worked perfectly and fast.

aeadie@sc.rr.com

Thanks AE, but I think Nero did the job. Once I got past the mental block of 'burning as image' (why would you burn a program as an image?) the burn went quick and smooth.

I've never heard of an ISO file before and wonder if I will ever run into one again?

He he he! I'm on!!! Coming to ya'll, live and in living color, thru Linux. It's kind of amazing to be doing this with a CD based operating system. It's like another universe. There appears to be a tremendous amount to learn here, like setting things up to recognize your printers etc.

But absolutely no problem getting on the web and to iboats.

Also there appears to be a few basic applications included with the OS. It will take time to ferret out all of the possibilities.

One intitial question I have is where are the various things stored that you save in linux. Things like cookies and favorites or word processor documents??

Whew! just stepped back thru the veil, into the normal windows environment. It was seamless. Just hit reboot, then 'delete', Linux spit out the CD and my computer just booted back into windows.

Don't know what I'm gonna do with it but it was a lot of fun and satisfaction to get there.

Re: Any Linux users?

the cool deal is you do not need a hard drive to run this.

that means, if you disable (disconect or remove) your hard drive, run on linux cd, you are impervious to any virus or spyware attacks. Only possable infection would be to the bios..........very unlikely.

When you power down puter any residual stuff in ram and mb cache is gone.

ya can surf all the porn and otherwise verboten cyber stuff with no change of infection.

occured to me to wonder, how much of a memory hog is this cd based os........as you will be running purely on ram, and, no hard drive virtual memory. I do believe that the system will only be able to page slot "0" of the ram memory chip bank. and some web pages require lots of memory to load.

back to you in Linux. SBN, what's the issue?? I'm on Comcast with a Motorola router, running this computer thru an additional switch and I didn't have any problems logging on. I just used the world like web browser icon, down in the task bar, typed in www.iboats.com, and away I flew.

You do get to the desktop with the start bar don't you??

Hmmmm, I'll have to figure out some clandistine things to do.

Just discovered that Graemlins don't work in Linux. Must be a Windows thing.

Well I guess they do. The just don't display on my edit post screen.
:D :D :D :D :D :D

Re: Any Linux users?

SBN,
My last post addressed the configuration of your ethernet adaptor in Knoppix. Try DHCP first, then go for static IP settings if no joy.

Boomyal, see !!! now that wasn't bad, was it?? NOT!
Glad you got it running. As to your saving your settings, you can save them to a floppy if need be and have them loaded when the CD is booted, so I've heard. I havn't done it myself tho. So much to do, so little time. I've had 3 drop off computers in here in 2 days and I'm running like crazy getting folks back online and flying. Between virus's and spyware, these machines are dropping like flies.

Xcusme, I know that. It's just I don't know where in Knoppix to make these settings.
