Re: Anybody looking for some Mary Jane?

Being stupid is what put him over the cliff. I've been smokeing the stuff over 30 years and haven't gone off a cliff yet. I used to think I was industructable when I was that age and did some pretty stupid stuff myself but it wasn't the MJ, Just me. I'd bet they got to horse playing and he went over. A lot of things get blamed on MJ when it was just being stupid. They {the VA} drug test me all the time to make sure I'm takeing my drugs and they don't say anything about the MJ. They sent me to a drug rehab counsler and after about 3 visits he asked me to stop waisting his time. I wonder when people are going to stop beliveing the governments lies. Reffer Madness was a joke and full of lies but people belived it all because the government said it was so. MJ doesn't make you smart or stupid, you do it to yourself...ANIMAL :D

Theory and reality are quite often opposite. Not saying the latter are not addicitive, so we add another?

20 MPH in the passing lane is just as dangerous as 90. ;-)

We had better be careful this topic has poof written all over it.

Well, a matured corn stalk take 5 months to grow, a small tree take 5 years. Many of my friends and I are perfect example of MJ being non addictive. We smoked it when we were younger because it was fun being stoned. We grew up and grew out of it like we never even touched it. We still drink alcohol and many still smoke cigarrette though. Don't worry about the highway because stoner only use country road anyway. :D From what I've observed anyway. :D

"Actually, I never said never to cut any tree. I would love to see the return of real forestry and growing natural, healthy forests in 100-200 year rotations, and having a sustained, MODEST harvest of quality lumber. This is not the corporate way though..."

If you cut them, they can't be old, at least not in human terms of lifespan.
Human nature won't let us grow them in 100-200 year rotations. Since we only live about 70-90 years, we want it now.

Who determines who gets the "quality lumber"? We have no shortage of trees in the USA. Other places, maybe but not here.

Where I grew up it was clearcut in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Today it is covered with enormous trees of numerous types. I guess it depends on where you are. Logging moved from east to west with civilization.

If we really want quality hardwoods, we would not try to extinguish forest fires. Fires are essential to growth of strong resilient trees. Fire is as natural and needed as rain.

who determines that now? Corporations and the free market. Maybe I am just barking up the wrong tree, I guess. No pun intended. I like to build and work with nice quality lumber. From what I've seen in the marketplace and being built into houses, most Americans don't care at all about quality material. In America, we get the garbage that comes off of the short rotation tree farms; the Japanese, who give a darn about quality, buy the nice clean older logs.

Long range thinking is what the corporation OUGHT to be good for. Supposedly the corporation will be around for that 200 year rotation, and think what nice, clear, tight grained doug fir boards will be worth in 2207...! Unfortunately, the corporation isn't thinking long term, they are barely thinking past the next fiscal quarter.

If we can't overcome our own short term greed and impatience, I guess we get what we deserve: dirty air and water, flooding, collapsing fisheries, denuded landscapes AND crummy quality lumber. Such a deal!

I think I'd better get out of here though, before someone scolds me for being off-topic, and let you guys get back to talking about smoking pot..... ;)
