I never joined MENSA but I do recognize that I need to lose weight anyway.

And it's why I am not a MENSAn nor would want to be. Of course I really see no need for one to join a vanity club other than to stroke an ego.

Maybe you need some hugs!

I'm in a similar situation as Captain Shickaboo, Had an auto accident in06 that caused me to leave the trades and get re-educated.(Not that my previous education was all that great)

I never thought I was very bright because it was drilled into me that I wasn't.

now I'm a year away from getting a bachelors with a triple major.

I never understood how much smarter my father was than me till the day I didn't heed his advice. He always told me to steer clear of fraternal organizations like Elks or Moose, clubs, or things that would require strong commitments because they are thing that will follow you your whole life.
So thinking I knew better than him and wanting to get away from the farm we had I joined the Marine Corps..........Boy was he ever right

Now I tend to steer clear of things like that. Good advice is good advice no matter how long ago you got it.;)

Tripple major?!? Good for you man! I was kinda glad what happened to me happened. I don't think I would've ever went to college if I didn't get thumped. I really enjoyed college, I haven't stopped going actually. (work foots the bill) And the scenery in the fall is always nice if you know what I mean.

Well, I am disappointed that so many feel it necessary to demean Mensa. I guess it is still the naive notion that intelligence is knowledge. It is not. Knowledge only comes from hard work at learning. Wisdom only comes from understanding hard and often painful experience. None of it is free.

My half brother has an IQ of 75. It took him 14 years to get through high school and he almost wasn't accepted by USAF. He has made a very successful life without college degrees because he has grit. Many folks with high IQs would be a lot better off with grit.

Forty years ago my Mensa membership and that of my daughter opened doors to opportunities for us. That was it. I merely wanted to know what, if any, benefit others might have gotten from membership.

Today, it appears, it could get one ostracized and demeaned. Really sad.:(

Bravo Zulu for your brother.
Didn't mean to sound like I was bashing MENSA, I was just showing my ignorance compared to that of experience.

Absolutely, I love the scenery especially on the first warm day and everyone is running around in shorts. As for the triple they're all very related. They actually only added about 10 or 12 classes to what I was going for:rolleyes:
I hadn't planned on college either, but I have enjoyed it more than I expected.

My take on objections to it JB - it is a social thing.
I can across a gentleman who worked in Human Resources who made the statement that any resume that had a Private School mentioned went straight in the trash.

I'll never make the cut for Mensa, but I understand the vital importance of organisations such as these. I belonged to different ones throughout my life and the wealth of information, assistance, ideas have been invaluable. My business would not be where it is without it. My business would be many times better had I belonged to more.

I belong to an international industry group (bit expensive - bit small). Their statement is " no member will refuse to share 'any' information they have (re our industry) with another member". Pretty tough actually, but it works really well.
Last yr the national president rings, introduces himself, says he's referred by the State President (who knows me) and asks if my 17y/o would consider a scholarship by way of exchange to either S.Africa, Austria, Canada or USA (Detroit). Cost to me is $10k total, and the term is 6mths. They pay everything else. We declined for the moment - University comes first - then he offers us a bersary on his books - which we declined as he already had one. If this sort of thing occurs in my industry, then it must occur in every industry. It's a learning and sharing and improving thing.

But, you are right, you can get ostracised and demeaned, but that is probably why such people keep to their own groups.

Cheers
Phillip

For her birthday one year (long ago berfore PC's) my wife ordered the series of tests and must have done very well as they bugged her for months to join. For her it was enough to know that she could have joined but chose not to??

Re: Anymore MENSA members here?

A group of mensa members were having lunch in a restaurant and one of them noticed the salt was in the pepper shaker, and the pepper was in the salt shaker. Being the most intelligent people on earth, they decided to devise a means to transfer them back into their proper containers using what was available on the table, spoons, napkins, water glasses etc. After a half an hour of meticulous planning, they were ready to make the transfer. They called the waitress over to display their brilliance, and tell her " We noticed the salt is in the pepper shaker and..." she cuts in "I'm so terribly sorry, that's all my fault". Then she switched the caps.
Engineers may be substituted for Mensa members in retelling.
My favorite and vastly overused curse is "May he who designed this spend eternity fixing it".
