And it's why I am not a MENSAn nor would want to be. Of course I really see no need for one to join a vanity club other than to stroke an ego.
I'm in a similar situation as Captain Shickaboo, Had an auto accident in06 that caused me to leave the trades and get re-educated.(Not that my previous education was all that great)
I never thought I was very bright because it was drilled into me that I wasn't.
now I'm a year away from getting a bachelors with a triple major.
I never understood how much smarter my father was than me till the day I didn't heed his advice. He always told me to steer clear of fraternal organizations like Elks or Moose, clubs, or things that would require strong commitments because they are thing that will follow you your whole life.
So thinking I knew better than him and wanting to get away from the farm we had I joined the Marine Corps..........Boy was he ever right
Now I tend to steer clear of things like that. Good advice is good advice no matter how long ago you got it.![]()
Bravo Zulu for your brother.Well, I am disappointed that so many feel it necessary to demean Mensa. I guess it is still the naive notion that intelligence is knowledge. It is not. Knowledge only comes from hard work at learning. Wisdom only comes from understanding hard and often painful experience. None of it is free.
My half brother has an IQ of 75. It took him 14 years to get through high school and he almost wasn't accepted by USAF. He has made a very successful life without college degrees because he has grit. Many folks with high IQs would be a lot better off with grit.
Forty years ago my Mensa membership and that of my daughter opened doors to opportunities for us. That was it. I merely wanted to know what, if any, benefit others might have gotten from membership.
Today, it appears, it could get one ostracized and demeaned. Really sad.![]()
Tripple major?!?Good for you man! I was kinda glad what happened to me happened. I don't think I would've ever went to college if I didn't get thumped. I really enjoyed college, I haven't stopped going actually. (work foots the bill) And the scenery in the fall is always nice if you know what I mean.
