Mine was just delivered last week and the boat handles great, but the 2006 Mercury 4 stroke ELPT 30 hp that I put on it proved to be a disappointment to me on my first day out with it on Sat.
I was wondering what someones experience is with the 40 max rating for this boat?
My problem with the 30 is that it takes a long time to get up out of the hole with just two people on it (the two of us are less than 300 lbs). I have to first trim down all the way and nurse the trim back up as it finally gets to plane. I'll burn out the tilt motors at this rate with many starts to plane. It will do about 22 mph once on plane, but it's just the effort it takes to get there is really disappointing to me for all the $$ I just spent.
This means to me that if I had 3 or 4 people in the boat and I still could not seat anyone in the front seat post position (in front of the windshield) which would get me to plane faster but that seat position has a warning label not to sit anyone up there beyond trolling speeds as they can get ejected.
So the other 1 or 2 people would have to sit behind us and I'm sure the planning problem will be that much worse. I know I could get a different pitch prop to pop the boat up faster, but I also know that will take away from the top speed too.
I've read here and been told always get the max the motor the boat can handle, if you can afford it. But I didn't think the 30 would be so underpowered on this rig even with just the two of us.
The 2006 30 hp model (187 lbs) is actually a little heavier than the 2007 30 hp by design, I think. Maybe if I swap it back out at the dealer for a 40 hp, I might not see that drastic a weight difference from what I have now if the 2007 40 is also made a little lighter than the 2006 40 hp.
I was worried that for the extra money I'll have to spend to do the swap, the extra weight now added on for the 40 will eat up the difference the 10 hp's would give me.
The Classic is 76" wide and 14'9" in length. I don't want to spring for the 40 if it's going to bog this rig down even more because of a 40 hp weighing in at about 216.
The plate says 660 max with people, motor and equipment. If I added 4 people plus the 40 hp and equipment I'd be around 850lbs. 3 people would bring it in around 650. I think I've already consoled myself to realizing that this is always going to be a 3 persons max boat, I can live with that but it's the planning issue that really bothers me.
I upgraded because my 2006 Sylvan Alaskan Deluxe 13 with a 9.9 hp 4 stroke Mercury tiller could not handle 3 people beyond 5 mph. Putting a bigger motor on it even though it was rated for 25 hp would have put me over on capacity and pulled the transom down too close to the waterline with a 187 lb 25 hp 4 stroke on it.
I know buying a bigger boat would of course be the answer, but I trailer to various lakes with my Saab 9-5. I was trying to stay below 15 feet. That's why I just bought the 1425 Classic.
Now I've moved up from $3500 invested last year to $12,500 for this new rig and now I'll need to shell out more dollars for the 40 hp, but I don't know if this will help solve my dilemma?
Any thoughts or experiences from the experts here is appreciated???
Thx
