Apartment rental deposit return - special primer for smoking damage?

They're saying paint/special primer is $50 a gallon??? Is this accurate? They billed me for 10 gals for a 2 bed 2 bath aptmt 889 sq ft. Any info would be nice, Thanks guys - loving new OWNED condo/townhouse w attached garage, 3 bed 2.5 bath!

$50 sounds a little high but not by much and 10 gallons sounds a little low so they must be planning to get it with one coat

Yup sounds about right. I guess they're passing on baseboards and trim at that price.

Sounds right. A good quality paint will be in the $50 to $60 range.

I spent some time in the apartment industry (blah) ... generally, the costs applied to turning a unit are a pure pass through not a profit center. If you had a pretty good apartment that you trusted for the most part, it's probably an honest price.

one time $100 dollar fine if you ever smoke in the house......hmmmm where do i pay. as a smoker if they had asked for 100 bucks before you rented would you have payed or smoked outside.

The smoke abatement primers are almost $43.00 a gallon at Lowes or Home Depot. With tax and a customary 10% markup for the contractor that would equal $50 a gallon. IMO there is only one product of any serious quality (BINS). It is used by the pro restoration. 10 gallons seems excessive but I did not see the unit. There also needs to be a labor charge for the extra coat since the primer is not a finish coat.

Sound's like the usual scam, this time aimed at smokers.

They already have your money and they were probably going to repaint the apartment anyway, if you have lived there a while.

When moving, we had to pay for some snags that our cat made, in some very old cloth drapes. At that time, every apartment in the complex was being upgraded, to mini-blinds, which ours was next on the list.

But hey, it's in the lease.

I haven't rented in years but crap like this was common years ago and I doubt anything has changed. They get your deposit and don't want to give it back.

I agree with the not giving it back here's how we make our money. But that's normally a management company and rental homes. The owner never saw it to start with and won't now. Your still smoke and think your "thinking" matters ? At least say you smoked outside and were trying to quit. My WORST days I still smoked outside. It will always smell no matter the cost.

Smoking cigs makes everything smell like crap. Your clothes, your hands, your car, your house, your breath, your friend's clothes when they come over, etc etc.. Got to be the worst smell that people choose to be around.

Meh, he's lucky they didn't charge him to change the carpet and do a full cleaning on all the fixtures, blinds and every other surface in the house. Nothing reeks more than a room that someone has been smoking in long term. You can tell if someone smokes when they walk past you, and presumably they are wearing clean clothes.

I am a landlord and have rented to smokers. The place reeks afterwords. Basically have to paint everything even if they are only in there 6 months.

In my other rental which is a vacation rental in Lake Tahoe, if anyone smokes in the home, they forfeit their security deposit.

Yeah, we still dabble in apartment turns/cleaning ... depending on the smoker things can be astoundingly bad.

What amazes me is that a non-smoker can actually live with these people. Some are children who I feel especially bad for. They must have no sense of smell anymore.

I have smoked my whole adult life and still have quite a good sense of smell.

I haven't smoked in my own house for over 25 years, but I have insulated the garage, installed an exhaust fan, small TV, stereo, but no chairs, don't want to get too comfortable just having a smoke break.
