Aplha One cavitation plate busted - I am an idiot

1990 Bluewater
3.7 Liter
Engine Serial# OC768011
Transome Serial# OC892745
OD Serial# OD306211

This past weekend I was using trolling plate that is mounted to cavitation plate and forgot to release the trolling plate before accelerating. I managed to bust up the cavitation plate (see pic). I see there are replacement parts available. Does the damage appear too bad to repair? I have a spare lower unit but the skag needs repair and it appears to have hit something very hard (prop trashed and trim tab busted). Not too sure I trust replacement. Should I look for a different out drive? Thoughts?

Take the lower unit off and take it to a GOOD aluminum welder.

One of the problems is I do not have the broken pieces- is that an issue?

Nope shouldnt need the old pieces.....A good fabricator can make his own.

Check out a picture of mine and i repaired it myself.......

So your eally don't see any reason why I should buy the replacement parts and it would be just as cheap to have a fab shop fab them up?

Ayuh,... That's what he's sayin', 'n that's what I'd do,... fab 'em up, 'n weld 'em in...

Then grind it out, 'n paint it...

That's the reason I advocate over-sized trim tabs, 'n drift socks for speed control....

I agree on that last point. There is now way I will put a trolling plate on there again. besides it decreases overall performance and effiiciency with the extra drag from the trolling plate. Over sized trim tab will help also?

Ayuh,.... It's been discussed in, I Believe, the Fishin' forum....

Btw,.... Smart tabs builds a Special fisherman's model...

Not takin' any credit, but John Intro'ed 'em 'bout 6 months after our conversation 'bout such a thing....
