I have that same engine. These are basically marinized car engines so the local machine shop with some Volvo expertise can help you with your marine motor. I would use an automotive top end gasket set, which is much cheaper than the marine version and it is basically the same.
Before yanking off the head I would check the timing belt to make sure it is on, and I am pretty sure that you can even check the valve springs without removing the head. But I would think that if you have a bad/leaking valve it would show up on the compression test. Mine did.
