I mostly agree with Rodbolt here, with a note that the walls could as likely be fine as not. Most of the ones I see are only a couple thousants out of spec and run-in just fine. A *little* taper is OK too as it helps keep the rings from sticking. But AGAIN this is where you are at a disadvantage with a Merc dealer. Brunswick is selling those pistons for $150 each while there are good new aftermarket pistons out there for 1/2 that. Boring the whole thing .015 over becomes more of an option when you know this.

As for the exhaust divider plate, that's a crapshoot. If it was freshwater it's prolly not an issue, and he well may have inspected it. Doing that inspection (assuming the bolts come out OK) adds about 1.5 hours and two gaskets to the bill. Most of that time is spent preparing the gasket surfaces and chasing the threads in the bolt holes with a tap.

-W

So far you're OK, you spent $250 but you now have a complete extra ignition and a pair of seats. So it averages out.

The old "cap and rotor" answer can be determined with by removing, cleaning and inspecting the cap. Depending on year and model that rotor may be molded onto the shaft, inspect and clean, do not try to remove. After that stuff is clean, troubleshooting those old ignitions is pretty straight forward.

Used starters appear all the time on Ebay.

-W

The dealer might be stupid. I hate to admit it, but all it takes to become a dealer is a little start up cash.

Re: "Authorized Dealers?" - Think Twice

Well I got my boat back and I'm not sure where I stand at the moment.Went to pick up motor and guess what, the bill is more than the quote!
Seems while working on it also replaced CDI pack, rebuilt starter and changed the carbies. I only paid for these to be rebuilt 30 days ago! At the same place .
I was like, why replace them if you just rebuilt my old set ? When I bought the boat I took it to him and had the timing / carbies checked and he said whoever has worked on these has put them back together incorrectly and has forced the factory fitted welch plugs that aren't supposed to be touched. BUT, he rebuilds them, and I go away thinking thats one area I don't have to worry about. He told me that if he was doing the rebuild, he wanted a set of carbies he knew were fine, as he didn't take out my welch plugs to see what the previous owner had done when he removed them. Bottom line, I have a new S/h set of carbies. he did admit he could see my point and refunded that part of the bill. (160 dollars)
Anyways, norebore but the head was honed ( right term?),divider plated checked, new CDI power pack, rectifier, 2 reed block assembly kits, centre main bearing, topmain bearing, bottom main bearing, 1 rod, a top and bottom end cap, new plugs, and associated seals , circlips, gaslets and the trim / tilt serviced as was the water pump with new impellor.
Now's the scary part...
I took it out yesterday and followed instructions as per his directions. Warmed it up for 5-10, took off and tried to get on plane, took 3 times as long as before and felt like weed wrapped around prop. Stopped and checked , no weed.
Took off again, motor sems to pick up a lil better but not what I expected. SO, I've run it for an hour, varying thye speed but to stay on plane couldn't vary too much or would fall back in to the hole. He said the motor would take a while to loosen up and after 100litres bring her back in for a check for no further cost. The motor was indeed starting to loosen and the motor felt like it was not under so much load but not the same. I thought I would have to be really careful I didn't over rev motor but so far this is not the case, feels like I have a 50 on theback insted of a 75. What should I do ? Could thi8s be a tune / timing problem or is the motor behaving normally after it has had a major rebuild and should I put more hours on it before I call him and inform him of my fears as I'm under warranty?

Yeah. I'm not too bad off. I think the dealer did tell me the starter was out. They did replace the timing belt & test compression & spark. They stopped at no spark.
Hopefully I have no problems with my new motor.
I'm going to use the old 50 as a learning tool for now. I have a manual for it & want to learn more about what makes 'em tick.

I am with MY
it was already put together wore out so its not gonna get any looser. with no rebore and a hone with old pistons I will bet the piston to wall clearence is at or sligtly larger than the max spec.
roller bearings require no break in like sleeve bearing.
the biggest part of the breakin is to allow the pistons, rings and cyl bores to all get along at the same party.
were it mine I would take it back and tell them its not right and maybe have them run it up on a test wheel or a dyno.

Re: "Authorized Dealers?" - Think Twice

Why do people take thier boats to dealers?
1: they don't know how to fix them by themselves
2: they tried but something broke
3; they don't have the tools ,test equippment
4;just don't have the time
These are just some of the reasons ,lots more ,so when they go I'm sure they didn't think it would be free of charge and word of mouth about any repair person travels FAST!!!
On the other hand I think dealers should have a look at least to see if it would be a repairable motor instead of saying it's to old Broken bolts and trobuleshooting are all parts of the trade. If in doubt for payments part deposits are a must to operate for the dealer and gives customer piece of mind it will be fixed leaving both parties happier and better relations As you can see I am on no ones side but I did give customer service and I always got paid ,always took a look at least to see if it was repairable most cases it was costly or not

Re: "Authorized Dealers?" - Think Twice

Well, the reason I had no power was I was only firing on 2 cylinders due to the fact the linkage between the 2 carbies had broken, " must have had a hairline crack in it "according to the mechanic.
I then picked it up and had to return it again as I had a problem - this time it was losing the prime and slowly dropping in revs. I checked for leaks along the fuel line , filter, pump etc.Couldn't find anything and by this time was getting a little excited as thge policy seems to be if it goes ok in the test tank, no need to put it in the water and see how the motor performs under load. Is it wrong to expect a mechanic would test the boat on the water after a rebuild ?I would have thought it was common practice but thats only because it mak3es sense to me, Bubba or not.hehehe
He did come out with me and guess what, she is running like a dream and I'm very happy this whole drama is over.

Big Ears

Glad your drama is over.I don't know your situation but where I work the lake is 2 miles away.To water test a boat,2 of us drive down there, launch the boat, test it,retrailer and drive back. This is at $70 per hour times two.

In actualality we explain this to our customer, let him do the test and report back to us.

Not the best way to do it,but we hate to charge $250 or more for a simple lake test. But sometimes, things really do have to be done on the water.

DHP

And that's again illustrates the advantage of a really small shop. :D

Around here, you wanna water test it? Wait for the *weekend*, and you buy the gas, beer, and bait. But all the fish belong to me. Wanna test it with a skier? Tuber? Wakeboard? Sure, I'll let you burn your gas to pull me around the lake all Saturday afternoon if it makes you feel better. Beats watching my Tower suck the gas doing the same thing.

-W

It's pretty rare that we need to water test one. Tank or hose is fine 99.99% of the time.

Re: "Authorized Dealers?" - Think Twice

Great stuff. I would like to add one more. I have an older '74 'rude 9.9 that was given to me by my father in law before he passed. He taught me a lot about the local fishing holes and how to appreciate vienna sausages and ice tea with Jack. I would not give up that motor for most things. It is on the back of a Gheeno (sp?) and I still use his pole. If it broke and truley cost $1k to fix it, I would fix it. Add sentimental value and that is what I would tell the mechanic if he told me it was not worth it to fix it.

Re: "Authorized Dealers?" - Think Twice

WOW! These discussions have been great. I have learned a great deal reading all of these posts in this thread. Both sides have very compelling arguements.

I have been reading these forums for about a month with anticipation of becoming a boat owner.
I will be taking posession next week of a 18 foot mid-sixties vintage Starcraft runabout that is powered by a 1976 Johnson 115. This boat was in my family and one of my brothers got it. The motor has seen little use up until 1987 when my brother took ownership of it. It continued to be used very little and has been sitting for approx. 8 years in a garage. Now, it's going to me. I was looking for tips on how to locate a good tech to get started assessing the condition of the motor.

From what I gather, it would be in my best interest to work on this motor myself, (as I have done in the past as I am the mechanical one in the family)as much as I can then find an independent to work on things that I cannot do myself nor have the time for.

I would like to thank those who have posted on both sides of the issue regarding repairs of older outboards. I find these forums to be highly informative and help take the mystery out of boat ownership. You can be assured that you will see my postings from time to time.
