Just a head's up. You'll need to upgrade your AVG Free soon. They do their best to hide the fact that they still have a free version, but it's there.

Re: Avg 8

That may be the good news for the other AV vendors. When I'm forced to buy, I'll consider some others.

I have the freebie at home, but I'm using the network edition at work (50 user license I think). My AV server is a VMWare virtual machine. It's currently running 7.5 and 8.0 in parallel while I gradually migrate the clients over to the new version. The new version is better, but it's still got some quirks on the management side of it. Was really hoping it would be a simple upgrade rather than a migration, but it's not too bad. It still beats the u know what out of Symantec Corporate Edition though.

I use avast, does it's own updating automatically.

I'm talking software version upgrade from 7.5 to 8.0. It does the virus updates automatically. I haven't tried Avast before, but I hear lots of good things about it.

i updated to 8.0, free. since the download, i think i'm slower.... could that be?
i had the anti spy ware version and anti virus version seperate in the old one too. is it now just the 8.0 and that covers both?

Re: Avg 8

I run 8.0 on my desktop. It slowed my poor old PII Armada 1750 down to much. Even with 7.5 I shut down the the resident scanner once in awhile (sometimes a downloaded video needs just bit more room).

I'm not upgrading until it stops working. I was told I'd have to upgrade on either this forum or another a while back and I didn't have to. It kept working just fine.

Re: Avg 8

Yeah that's what gripes me. Eventually it's gonna have to happen.
Finally broke down and installed XP-Pro on on the PII about 3 months ago.
Surprisingly, that after some tweaking it works quite well. :D

Course as always the real killer is program bloat.

Re: Avg 8

I have installed the new AVG 8.0 free version on a few machines that I have worked on lately and it appears to run with less overhead but I don't yet have it on any of my own computers.I am sure that I will have to make the move eventually though.I have tried Avast in the past and it seemed to want too much control of my resources but maybe I just didn't take the time to configure it properly. After a month or so I uninstalled it.Ron G

Ziggy.... you are right. I had the AVG "tool bar" on my browser but it dragged the speed to load things way down. I eliminatated the AVG tool bar and recovered most of my speed and did not lose the avg working properly. Just a hint for you.

I use Avast now also, rather then AVG, I like it better, it's simpler. I had AVG for quite awhile previously, and it was confusing, & clunky, to me to set up, & work with.

If you choose the advanced/custom (whatever they're calling it on this one) install, you can choose which components get installed.
