Bad Saturday :-( Need some help

Ok so I was on the lake and I ended up having to tow a friend back to shore which was fine and I thought Karma was in my favor for the day until a floating rope got caught in my prop (very dark did not see it) and also a utility knife fell between my dual battery setup at which point I noticed my hot wire on my starter was cherry red and that is when we found the utility knife between the batteries Hot and Negative (I do not know how it got up there)

I think that my starter is now shot since I had to swim the boat to shore which took 2 + hours but man I feel good after that workout. When the ignition is turned you hear a single click, is there a simple way to test the starter while still attached or should I just take it out? I have a

Volvo AQ 125 A

All of my electrical works fine, Lights, Horn, radio etc...

Did you recharge your battery after the mishap? There may not be enough juice left to kick over the starter. A damaged battery can show full voltage but have no capacity to crank the starter. Maybe try a new fully charged battery and see if that works. You might want to check all the battery cable connections. If they were toasted when the battery shorted out they may be compromised.

I have oars thank you. It was faster to swim it in, it's a 16 foot fish/ski if it were my 19 Cuddy I am sure I would have had to use oars. Also thanks for the sarcastic remark maybe that will fix my problem.

Your comments really spoil what a "Help" board is all about and granted you are not the only one but when someone has a bad day it generally is not a joke so go to another section that is not a serious place to comment. Look above your post at the advice that was given as yours is null. I could have used you since you Troll very well.

check your battery as has been said. if it's not the battery, a good shop will bench test your starter usually for free. automotive elec. shops can work on marine units.

this was pretty funny, "I could have used you since you Troll very well."

i don't even bother with oars. 23' inboard, also quicker to swim it in. if the wind is right and the current is with me, i can get my boat to spin in a circle if i'm lucky.

Thanks to all that offered up help. I charged my cranking battery overnight and it took some time so it must have dis charged and I did not have time to try it this morning before leaving for work so I will check tonight.

Ok I charged both batteries and I get nothing but the click so I checked and it was coming from the 12volt relay so I replaced that and still 1 single click with the turn of the key. I removed the starter and it smells horribly burnt out so I have ordered another one and I will pick it up this evening.

Would a fried starter cause the relay to click once? Also this is a AQ 125 A does anyone have a good schematic of the starter? there is a orange wire with a yellow stripe that I have no idea where it goes to on the engine from the starter.

Problem solved.

Replaced Starter - No Start
Took both batteries to get tested - Gel battery was fried
Went back to single battery - Still no start

The red and yellow wire I was asking about went to the 12 volt relay and completed the circuit - Engine started when placed in the module which was done by luck.

Red wire with yellow stripe connected to the starter goes to the 12 volt relay to complete the circuit.
