I am curious how many people are seeing bans on 2-cycle engines. I ask as about 1/3 of the lakes in my state now ban them due to pollution.

I don't see that happening as some of the reports I have read a lot of the newer 2 strokes run cleaner than 4 strokes.

None here in Minnesota, although there are a lot of small lakes in the cities that ban all gasoline powered motors.

Here in the northern wastelands, we're so fond of our little old Johnnyrudes that there'd be a major uprising if they tried to ban them. There's at least one old outboard in every garage in the state. I believe it's a state law that you must own a Johnson, Evinrude, or old Mercury of some description.

This last week, I saw a 9.8 hp Evinrude 4-cylinder from the 1940s on a guy's brand-new Lowe 14' aluminum boat at my favorite lake. It was pushing his boat right along as he moved to a new fishing spot.

Where are you? Links to regulations? Specific language? Usually rumor and not fact . . . And when you say "all" two cycles that is another thing that is typically misstated or misunderstood . . .

I have a cottage on a national park in Canada.
They banned all pwc,s 4 years ago but yet allowed jet boats(same thing)
They also made it mandatory that you can only use emission certified motors.
Most of the new efi/dfi 2 strokes are allowed & all 4 strokes & inboards are ok.

I can't believe they'd do that. That would really kickup the GDP if those laws catch on. Scary.

What part of "not engine topics" did you not understand, Bubba?

Moving this.

where are you at in Missouri? I am in Missouri and at least in my area non of the lakes have banned them. What lakes are you boating at. A lot of the small ones might be banning them maybe. I would like to know which ones?

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

I am putting a duplicate of this thread in the PWCs forum, as they are not outboards but are mostly affected by regulations concerning 2 stroke engines.

Rumor ^^^^^ There are a few individual lakes for sure. Thankfully most of the state is relying on "tailpipe" emissions as opposed to banning specific technologies.

As stated elsewhere should be "meet emission requirements".
Etec 2 strokes meet or exceed carb requirements.Yes most old tech 2 strokes don't meet requirements.

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

going by memory (and i will admit it has some holes in it) i thought the original plan was that after a certain year the manufacturers had to meet specific emmision stadards. then attrition was supposed to slowly eliminate the higher polution outboards. not that anything was ever going to be banned from use but just banning anything new from being sold in the US that didn't meet EPA standards. and if i remember right the time frame to meet emission standards varied by HP ratings.

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

"Carbureted" two stroke engines (outboard and pwc alike) have been banned at Lake Tahoe and other California lakes for a while now.

I have been curious to know how the marine dealers in the area sold off all their trade-in engines when the transformation to DFI/EFI or 4-Stroke designs took hold.

I suppose they must have gotten sold off to other dealers in out-lying areas that had not suffered the ban yet.....

it would be interesting to hear from some of the guys (or gals) from europe as to what is happening over there to 2 strokes since they have had stricter polution rules for a while.

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

guess he is not going to provide a list of the lakes. I live here in Missouri and at least on the large lakes and the rivers there is no ban to my knowledge. There are a number of smaller lakes and some private lakes that I don't frequent so I cannot say about them.

Same thing, but worse. :(

They are even trying to ban certain older (some German diesels that are less than 4 years old don't even get the new stickers) cars and trucks from larger cities now, even if you live in the city, you won't be able to drive your car home if it is not a newer model meeting ever changing requirements. The car industry is playing a big role in this with new sales going down year after year. It is their new way to force people to buy new cars.

The rules & requirements are also different from city to city, and lake to lake. No one knows what to do. People who bought several years ago thought they would be OK, they now had the newest. Wrong!

I wouldn't be surprised if the outboard manufactures aren't also working in the background here (just my thought, unlike the auto industry, I am not sure here). All that they are achieving though, is to push a already troubled boating industry over the edge.

People that are having a hard time combining boating and living, are just throwing in the towel. With the crashing economy, and exploding gas prices sucking up their disposable income, many were already boating less, if at all.

Making them buy new motors, when their old ones were in good condition is the straw that broke the camels back in many cases.

For people that aren't boaters, in a country that is very jealous of everything they don't have, we are an easy to sell target in political speeches where the environment is often the only theme.

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

I don't think there will ever be a complete 2 stroke ban. They are used for so many applications beyond marine applications like chainsaws, weedeaters, blowers, headgers, edgers, dirt bikes, etc.

If a lake community is after 2 strokes, they should also ban any 2 stroke lawn equipment, fertilizer, and other everyday items that lead to water pollution and fowling.

I envision a lake front home owner on their front lawn shaking their fist and screaming at a boater while the home owner is dumping weed&feed with pesticides all over their lawn and wondering why the fish are going and the lake is polluted.

I do understand that most lakes are not populated, but it is very arrogant to point to 1 thing and say it is the only reason for pollution.

Re: Banning 2-Cycle engines???

just as a question of interest on this topic: besides the ETECS and DI outboards are there any new 2 stroke outboards still for sale in the US? or are we now in the attrition stage of phasing 2 strokes out?
