Gee, this is kind of funny.....someone who owns a
Baja ripping on Bayliners. Last time I checked Baja was an ENTRY level go fast boat....just ask any Sonic or Fountain owner.

Re: Bayliner boats

You think you all would learn about these dam Bayliner trolls.
I do have a question or two though. mtrainTurbo 1st; You are getting 60+ mph out of a 4.3L Capri??? Seems a little fast. Must be a very light boat. You may want to check that with GPS. 2nd; Is that you in the picture with the caption “ Oh yeah, I recall seeing something about Bayliners being underpowered. So here is a pic of me struggling to get the boat up to speed. That speed being 60 mph, I was still at 57 and climbing”? I really don't think that picture (57mph running between a boat and a very close shore line) is a good example of someone acting as a responsible Bayliner representative. That picture alone will convince some that the bad rep Bayliner owners have (irresponsible, novice, dangerous) is true.
As for Bondo, I really don't see where he deserves the attack he has got from what he has said. Some need to lighten up here.
As for Ryan. He can speak for himself and he sure seems to like a fight so good luck, You are going to need it.
One thing I have learned over the years is “people who deny something the loudest are usually guilty of something”.
As for Larson........I had a 1973 18’ boat once. What a POS. I watched that one get crushed.

Yes, but I no longer own a baja :p Ask any Sonic or Fountain owner about an APACHE, and see what remark you get..

Re: Bayliner boats

Well, way back near the beginning of this thread, I said:

I absolutely defy anyone to tell me what's wrong with my Bayliner. I've thrown down this gauntlet before, and got no intelligent responses. Tell me where to look, I'll take a picture and post it here for all to see.

Any takers this time around, all you know-it-alls?
Would this not help put some of this to rest? Or is it, as I suspect, because the whole "bilgeliner" thing is crap?

Why do so many of you try so hard to keep the unsuspecting public out of a boat you know absolutely nothing about except that it's lower priced, and therefore a better value than all the other brands? I'm especially puzzled by Bondo. He has a lot of experience and generally gives good advice...but his "bilgeliner" schtick undermines his credibility to any intelligent reader who follows these discussions and weighs facts against facts (not opinions).

So I ask again, and this is dead simple, guys: Where should I look in my brand new Bayliner for evidence of cheap, lightweight construction, or any evidence of it being a "lower quality boat"? I will take a picture and post it for all to see. Come on! All you uneducated blowhards must be able to come up with something if Bayliners are as bad as you say!

Re: Bayliner boats

Strato, I'll answer it for you. The issue has never been with the larger Bayliners, they have always been fine. The issue stems from the build quality of the entry level small runabouts built from mid 80's into the 90's. If maintained properly, kept covered, and taken care of, those boats faired decently, but if left out in the weather and abused, they tended to show age at a faster rate. Also, during that time period, they tended to skimp on the layup of the hull, skipping a layer of glass here and there, rushing through assembly, basically being built by workers who didn't care. That comes directly from an Army Recruiter buddy of mine who worked at a Bayliner plant back then.

Those boats can be had at a good price now because of the stigma, and can be rebuilt into excellent boats, just ask Realgun. As far as performance goes, I have been on some skanky, nasty Bayliners that hauled arse, even with smaller engines. Even knowing what I know about them, I would buy an early 90's Capri, and fix the inadequacies, and have a good boat. I do like the styling of the boats.

Bayliners can be good if taken care of, but the entry level runabouts do need more caution and care than the same boat from the other manufacturers. Also, people hear so much more about Bayliners because there are 5 billion of them out there. They were produced and sold at huge volumes, it is no wonder you hear more about them, there is just more of them than any other boat.

In summary, if you buy a $50,000 Bayliner, you get a $50,000 boat. If you buy a $9000 Bayliner, you get a $9000 boat.

Re: Bayliner boats

Well folks, this has gone on for some time and will never end, I can see that. As far as I am concerned my Bayliner is and does just what I want and at a good Price for me. A lot of you have never owned a bayliner and are going by what others have stated, of course that is just someones oppinion. Mine is that they are a great boat at a great price that lets families get on the water for family time that if they had to purches a more expensive boat would more then likely not be able to. I have stated before that I love my little Bayliner and I would not trade her for your fancy one for love nor money. Besides, your big boat would not do well in this smaller lake we have here. My Bayliner fits right in with all of the other boat like cobalt and the rest and we all talk to each other with respect and have fun together. Hope bayliner stays low price for when I want a new one I will get a Bayliner again. Take your big twin engine boats and stay at Erie, That is a nice looking boat but not my cup of tea so to speak, I would have trouble trolling for fish with it.

Re: Bayliner boats

JasonJ, very well stated. Here is what I don't get, however. Did Bondo or RyanT or baja power ever specify "the build quality of the entry level small runabouts built from mid 80's into the 90's"? No, they basically say "Bayliners (bilgeliners) are very low quality boats operated by inexperienced people". RyanT actually said "Bayliners are made in Mexico" as a general statement. When I called him on it, he said "I never said ALL Bayliners were built in Mexico". Then he said they won't give factory tours. Was this based on fact? Obviously not, since Bayliner welcomes factory tours. Gimme a break! For someone who doesn't know any better and actually believes this crap, they may end up spending a lot more money than is perhaps necessary, to get what they want out of their family's boating adventures.

And what's with the sheep, baja power? As soon as you post something like that, you're out of the debate.

Boaters want value for their hard earned money. Boats are expensive. Running and maintaining them is expensive. A few people want to be seen and have their worth judged in an expensive, fast boat, and that's fine. Others like an expensive boat because it's payback to themselves for working hard. But the vast majority want value...and Bayliner gives them that in spades.

Anyone want to rebut? Be prepared with facts, not opinions.

Re: Bayliner boats

No offense, but suggest that in debating a topic as broad as 'Bayliners' you're wasting your time.

Without reference to size, year, etc. how could you possibly expect one position to cover all possibilities?

Re: Bayliner boats

The yardstick to measure quality and value is repeat customers. Bayliner has many. I am currently enjoying my second, a 28'. Can I afford a more expensive boat? Yes. You may call it a "Bilgeliner"........I call mine a "Bankliner" as I still bank 25% of my monthly income. The following picture was taken when the boat was 4 years old. It's not falling apart now is it?

Which should tell you something about passing judgement without knowing the facts behind it.

The two pics I posted, the one of me in my boat and the other showing two Crownlines, were taken on the South Branch of the Chicago River on April 24th. Anyone familiar with that stretch of waterway knows that there is NOTHING THERE. Absolutely nothing. No boats, docks, marinas....nothing. Its a man made barge canal that is 21 feet deep right up to the shore.

The pic of me and my boat was taken by the 28 foot black and white Crownline. It is a STAGED picture...that is to say it was carefully orchestrated via VHF radio.

The speed was 57 mph, and yes it was verified by GPS. I can bring the gentleman into the discussion if you would like. I will reach 60 when I swap the carb to a 4bbl. I am running a SS prop which is giving me the extra mph over the 53 mph stock. MINION here in this thread runs with me, and will verify that speed.

The picture itself is misleading. I was not really in a bend in the river, though it appears like it. The open water you see behind me is a barge turning basin. I intentionally laid my boat over on its side for the camera. The land you see is not actually a straight shore, but a point of land. If you want I can post a map of the stretch of channel, its very convoluted in shore.

Hopefully this explains a little more. Safety is always the upmost importance to me....I am Coast Guard certified for the year. Oh yeah, I basically grew up around boats my entire life, and I lived in the 1000 Islands for 13 years (Hey Bondo, what marina are you at?? :) ) I am pretty confident in my boat handling abilities...lets just leave it at that.
