Re: Bayliner boats

My 98 is a sweet little hull.
A hull I might add with a very efficient stepped bottom. All that in an 18 bowrider. Talk about quality for the buck. I can varify Mtrains speeds he leaves me in the spray sometimes.
It's O.K. I have a sweet 3 liter and a 45MPH boat.Could not be happier with her. I CAN afford a much bigger/faster boat , but I'm having way too much fun with this one for the last 5 years.
Yes it does not have gold plated fittings but then I do not boat to impress I boat to have fun! :D

Its not gold plated fittings. Its a gilded sticker that Sea Ray uses. :)

Oh, forgot to mention...I recently moved to southern California, and I am happy to note that both the Bayliner and the Bayliner-made Escort Trailer made the 2,300 mile journey without incident.

Re: Bayliner boats

Hi Guy's, I went from a 14' 9.9 fishing boat to my older 17', 85hp Bayliner and I feel like a King. It is paid for, runs cheap, and I can fix anything that needs fixed with the boat. We take it for little day trips with GrandDaughters who think they are in heaven when we pull them in the tube. Thanks for all the good posts, some should have been left out but people are people. Have a nice day. Happy Easter

"BE" = Boat Envy
1. If it did not cost as much as yours..it cant be as good.
2. Never enjoy yours, or allow anyone to enjoy their boat if it cost less than some high priced boat.
3. Always be dissatisfied with what you have.
4. If it is doing the same job as yours for less money..it is your job to tell that boater of his poor choice in watercraft.

I enjoy threads like this !!

Re: Bayliner boats

I own a 1986 Bayliner Contessa 2850 and this is my first big boat. When I was looking for a family weekender and I always had a Sea Ray in mind. After several months of searching I finally realized that every Sea Ray I looked at (all different years)had some type of structural problem in the bilge or under the cabin deck. Due to water or hull stress. I couldn't believe the amount of money people wanted for these boats. It was like hey it's a Sea Ray thats what they go for!
Well I got smart and started looking at Bayliners. None of them had any of the stringer or structural problems I had seen in the other boats.
I saved thousands on this boat compared to the same year Sea Ray or a couple of years older.
Used her all last summer and never had a problem, using the money I saved for a few years of gas.
Don't knock it unless youv'e tried it.

Garry

Re: Bayliner boats

You also have one of the very BEST old Bayliners. The 2850 Contessa is still a sought after boat (I am looking for one as well, same year as yours, but with twin Volvo 305s...its a rare beast) and very well built. Probably one of the most solid 28 foot cruisers you can buy.

NICE boat. :) *thumbs up*

Re: Bayliner boats

Well guys it's not gold plated but I just went out and in 2 hours did all the spring "get ready for the first splash work".
Cap,rotor, drain plugs in,battery in, run her on the muffs, swapped plugs and slipped getting back in her and hit the side of the hull pretty hard.
No dent, My head did not go through the hull.
Needless to say I got the worst of it. But I did not hurt my baby after all.Suprising since I am such a little person and it's just a bildgeliner.

Time for a little Jack on the rocks!

Re: Bayliner boats

Thanks Matt
All I really had to do was give her a good wipe down in and out and spend a few dollars on the 12 volt wiring under the dash.Replace the 12 volt potable water pump. A new set of wires, plugs, cap & rotor and I was good to go.
Good luck in finding a twin I saw none of them.
Mine is a Volvo Penta 350/260hp.She goes but takes a while to get there.
Garry

Re: Bayliner boats

There is a gent on the Bayliner Owners Club who has repowered that boat with a fuel injected 8.1L Duoprop, with amazing results. You might want to keep that in mind come repower time. Matter of fact, if you havent' yet, head over to:

www.baylinerownersclub.org

THats where all the intelligent Bayliner discussion happens.

All we ask is that you glue the through-hulls back in when the fall out. ;)

Re: Bayliner boats

OMG Not again.
#1 What is a troll?
#2 I went away for the weekend to look at that 1998 Bayliner 2355. I posted this thread before hand to see if anyone had any good information on what to look for (specifically maybe). I can't say I'm totally surprised by some of the responses though. Always a hotly debated topic, unfortunately with the issue always becoming the Bayliner bashers attitudes rather than information. I had a good chat with the fella' that owns the boat and he nailed it. People say things online that they wouldn't say in person. The keyboard is an easy place to be rude and obnoxious. All those responses I just read that have offensive undertones... go find another thread to post your keyboard diarrhea. I'm looking for civil discussion not what you have to offer.
#3 About the boat... I didn't buy it but it wasn't an issue with the quality. It was more about price, currency exchange rates, details of what's included and so forth. The only things that were quality issues were the cheap (broken) stove element, the plastic cupboard latches and some of the hardware looked cheap (chromed pot metal or something). There were other things but more 'wear and tear' stuff that would've happened to any boat. It had a solid hull, the hatches and floors looked to be at least 2" thick and felt solid. I crawled around, looked in all the corners and pounded on things. I'm sure I've looked at hundreds of boats over the past 23 years of my boating experiences and there isn't a quality problem here.

Be more educational if we just joined the bottom of this thread to the top!

That way, we can all leave the loop and get on with something else.

Re: Bayliner boats

Well, in the future, when Bondo says "check the archives, it's all there", this thread will be there. Quite a few more facts than opinions this time around. Heck, we even turned up an impostor (baja power) in a related thread.

Misinformation from people who don't know what they're talking about has no place in the boat-buying world. There's room for everyone on the water and brand snobbery is just plain immature, whether it's motorcycles, cars or boats.

BTW, I find it interesting that 80-something posts later, none of the bashers intelligently responded to my challenge to tell us what to look for in our POS boats to indicate poor quality. As I expected.

Yeah Strat,
That interior is awesome... no wonder you spent your holidays on her. Also, if you hear of another 2355 in the area let me know. Thanks.
