...Since I've owned a boat. I hope to find the right boat next year, but I've come to terms there is no right boat for every job. I might end up with a cheap Jon to fish in & a pontoon or deckboat for family time. Who knows, there are lots of choices.

I am however making due. I caught these off on a pier on the St. Johns last night. I was still pulling them in with just about every cast, but I was wore out by 2am.

What lb. test line did you use? You were wore out by 2am? Did you have the drag on the reel set to lightly? I mean, come on, I know there are a lot there; but how much of a fight can a shrimp put up???:p They're only med/lg. What... 25-35 per lb? If ya didn't use bait, it musta bin a rreeaally tiny little jig!!!

Sorry you didn't make it over to the Municipal Marina in June, J. You missed another great one last week on Nettles Island hosted by sasto and mrs sasto. Maybe we'll meet next Spring...:)

Oh, and by the way, those are some beautiful looking shrimp you caught!!!;)

Took me a second read to get that & I almost lost my drink:) Anyway, I've caught many without baiting, but you do get better results with a 'cocktail'. I use shrimp meal, flower, & rocksalt. Add water to make some meatball sized bait & toss'em in.

However, I'd like to pose a boat-of-choice question for you guys with the following in mind...

-Trailerable (5000lbs max)
-Outboard (enough to pull a skier)
-family friendly like a pontoon
-very fish friendly
-take offshore under decent conditions
-bodies of water include St. Johns river, intercoastal, & atlantic

... As mentioned before I know there's not one boat that does everything perfectly. I personally would love a simple center console to fish with, but they don't fit the family needs as well. I like the layout of a pontoon, but I really don't want the station wagon of boats, nor are they suited for offshore. Deckboats seem to be good choice, but it seems hard to find a layout I like. Just curious to see what you guys would lean toward.

Yep... Your fault. Looks like that's changing for the better now.;) So, gonna keep hangin' wit us boatin' type peeps, or what???

...And what do you think about a walk around cuddy? Personally, I think it's the best of all five worlds you're looking for.:) Doesn't even come with a compromise.:D Just NAILS everything you're looking for... Plus, if (when) ya get caught in some rough seas, you'll be well equipped.

Re: Been almost 2 years...

I reckon so being that iboats remains at the top of my favs.

You know I never put much thought into a WAC, but one may fit the bill. Went to a boat show in JAX not long ago & I dang near couldn't get my kids out of a cuddy. May have to take a closer look at them. Plus if I managed to pull in a few mahi offshore I'm sure the lady would consider it worthwhile:)

Good luck, J. Keep us posted.

...And by the way, where exactly did you get the shrimp? Near home?

Maybe so. We'll see what pans out.

I caught those off shands pier not far from my house. Kinda slow when I first arrive around 11, but they of coarse seemed plentiful toward the end when I was tired of casting.

Isn't that usually how it goes?

What street is Shands pier on? Is shrimp "open" season? If not, when does it open and close?

Interested in a Dusky 26 foot center console with trailer?

Shands peir is just north of the Shands bridge on the east side of the St. Johns. Not sure when the season 'opens', but from what I understand they usually run August through last Sept give or take a few weeks.

I might be, but I wouldn't exactly say we're in driving distance.

Thanks, J. That'll just have to wait 'till next year. I'll let you know next time we head to St Augustine. We should get together.

go to any dock at night........shine a flashlight in the water on the side of the posts.......you will see a bazillion little orange eyes starring at you........slowly take your net and put it in the water a foot away from the post.....sink the net....then touch the edge of the net to the post.....then very quickly...pull up....

you have a net full of shrimp cocktail !

either that......or watch a movie called forrest gump......its explained pretty well in that show.
