Ok here's the deal, trading a 2000 BassCat Lakesport aluminum boat with a 75hp mariner, with a 1997 Nitro 700XL dual console with 120hp force motor fiberglass boat, both boats have about the same electronics, trolling motors, storage. Both are about same condition. Questions are -

1. Is this a equal deal? if not who's getting the better end
2. Which motor is better? both are Mercury right?
3. what would be some worries with each?

I wanna make sure we are both getting a good deal

Who initiated this trade?

Are both boats in equal condition?

A Force from that year model is basically a Merc...not a Chrysler. I have a 1995 120hp Force that runs true as can be without any complaints (other than the starter being replaced last year...but it was 16 years old).

Incorrect. That year motor incorporated a few Merc parts but it is very much still a Chrysler/Force. Parts are becoming scarce and many mechanics won't work on them.

How do we know for sure the model year of either motor? All we know is the model year of the boat. I don't know about everyone else, but I have yet to own a boat that had matching model years. There is a possibility that these could have been repowered at some point being that we are talking about 15 yr and 12yr old rigs. (so they could be newer or significantly older motors).

All I have to go by is what my marine guy told me (and that's that the 1995 Force I have has mercury ignition, power pac, gearing, etc). Again, other than my starter issue, I haven't had a need to dig for parts, but the impression my mechanic gave me when asking about the motor was that finding parts wouldn't be an issue if something we to arise.

Pretty sure he said the motor was a 1996

Well, that could be a good thing. Hated by you does not speak for "most".

Is the other guy more than happy to trade? If so, I'd go over every inch of his boat before even considering a trade. Dealing with rot on a fiberglass boat is much more involved than with an aluminum.

What would be the motives from both sides to trade.

I would start with....
Why do you not want your boat.
Why does he not want his boat.

around 95/96 the lines between merc and force got really blurry. The force block was still used, but merc electronics were thrown in depending on model. (also, in that time frame merc had identical engines with different stickers. One with force, one with merc. They were the frankensteins with force blocks/merc electronics)
