Out on lake for about an hour. Boat ran great. heading across lake and next thing I now it just stops. I cut it off and it starts right back up, no problem. Give it a little gas and nothing, It just seems like its not going into gear. Any ideas will help. Thanks

If your motor revs in gear and no propulsion. Slipped prop hub or engine coupler roached out.

out of the water put it in gear and try to turn the prop by hand, you shouldnt be able to move it at all. If it moves, look to see if the shaft is moving, if it is, check the lower unit. If the prop moves and the shaft doesnt, needs a prop.

ok. took the lower unit off. the upper part with the big drive shaft the comes out of the boat. those gears look to be grinding, i mean there is metal shaving inside the compartment. This has to be the problem right???? What exactly are these gears called, so I can search for prices

I've seen rebuilt units sell for 1500 bones plus your old one. Check e'bay there are some sellers there, unless your a really good I/O mechanic forget about buying gear and bearing sets because setting them up requires ALOT of know how not to mention the specialty tools.

i mean there is metal shaving inside the compartment.

You are describing a failed coupler.

In addition to removing the drive, you must remove the engine.

It looks like this:

And you can buy one right here on iboats!!

If you removed the top cap off the drive and saw damaged/destroyed gears inside, you'll be having the entire drive rebuilt.

Yea found some bearings and gears set online for 540. Then found some with new shafts for 1100. The ujoint on mine are rusted should I go ahead and replace with the shaft kit.

Before you put out that much money to try to rebuild a Cobra, you might consider replacing it unless you have all the specialized tools to set up the bearing preloads etc....put one together wrong and it won't last long.....

Also, before you replace a Cobra with another Cobra, you might consider finding a Mercruiser transom mount, flywheel housing and drive etc... and swapping out the whole mess....

Another choice would be to replace with SEI "kit" http://www.sterndrive.cc/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=9D-116&Category_Code=Cobra.

OK. so you are saying that I can buy a replacement drive with a different one. I went to the website but couldnt find one to replace OMC. Also, went onto ebay and found an upper case with new bearings init. The cost would be 750 shipped to me. Thinking this would be cheaper than buying new one or getting mine repaired. Thoughts??

In a Cobra, the oil is shared top to bottom. You would have to disassemble the lower to ensure that it wasn't damaged also.

Bolt your current lower to a different upper, and both will not last long...

I guess by "gears" he means the ACTUAL gears.... I thought by "Compartment" he meant inside the boat NOT inside the upper gear housing.......

"Words" mean everything!!! Poor grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, can REALLY confuse us all!!! Please DON'T TAKE OFFENSE my friend!!....NONE intended at all!!........ A lot of us try to help people here but it's very difficult when the description is even a little confusing....

Just saying.......:D

PICTURES of course, HELP immensely.......

sorry guys I'm not an English major, nor have I had a boat for a long time. I explained my situation the best I could. I hope that when I have a boat for 4 to 5 years from now I will know has much as you all do. I have tried to upload images but can't seem to figure it out. Will try again tonight though.
