Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

The weather is looking really nice for the weekend. Maybe we can try for another raft up?

I'll be around on Sunday, probably staying onboard until Monday morning. Wx looks to be perfect- upper 70's, wind 5 to 10..
Don't know where I'll end up but I'll be waiting for the Admiral to arrive mid-afternoon, so I won't be going too far from homeport!
I'm bringing some 'toys' to play with.
To anyone in the HdG area- give me a call if you want to raft up. The iboats 'regulars' have my # but I also monitor 09 and 16- well MOST of the time, anyway.....

Cruised up to the Red Bull FlugTag today. Pretty cool event. Had a lot of fun hanging out and watching these people trying to fly. But holy cow, the 40 mile cruise up and 40 miles back was the roughest most unpredictable sea conditions I?ve really ever been in (mind you my buddy and I used to take my walk around out in Nor-Easters or small craft advisories, we've seen some crazy stuff). Also apparently trying to anchor in the river around Philly is impossible. After many tries my anchor finally held, upon retrieving I discovered why. It must have hooked an obstruction because the only thing I pulled up was a severed line. That?s my 2nd anchor this summer. We made it back safe, sound and nice and wet. My crew hung in there and we even ended up cruising down the Chesapeake Inn for some dinner.

Looks like I will be heading out this afternoon. Not sure where I will be going... all depends on my friend. He has been having a water problem. May drop in at Charlstown and head south. I want to head up the Sassafras to visit family that has a place just beyond Loyd's Creek.

I will have the radio on.

Let us know!

Looks like we will be down sometime today. Probably do some crabbing in the Elk for a little. Don't know what else, but we will keep the radio on 9 & 16.

Brandon-
a couple of my dock neighbors got quite a haul yesterday. They both set traps along the HdG channel just southeast of Sand Island. One of them told me the crabs were 'literally walking over my feet' when he was wading at Sand Island.

Yeah, it sure seems tough to get our little group together on the water. We gotta just keep trying.
For only the second time this season I had my family (all 3 of us plus the kids' dog) onboard at the same time. Took an easy run around Garrett and eventually anchored off the western edge of the Flats not too far from the NOAA smart bouy. I like that spot. We fired up the grill and had dinner onboard.

Boating adventure. We trailer down to Easton and put the boat in on the Tred avon river and cruised about 9 miles down to Oxford Md. Wow did we run into some nice boats down there. I must have seen about 9 Hinklies sp? and some major 60 foot plus boats. We headed out into the bay from there and crossed 9 miles in 3 foot seas to Tihlman island. Another great place to visit but I have to say I was a little nervous in all that chop in such a small boat. We took water over the bow once or twice winds above 20 mph. Went back to Oxford for dinner and ate crabs at Schooners to a band and setting sun. At dusk we crusied back up the river put the boat on the trailer and headed for the Days Inn in Easton.

Day 2 we woke up and headed to the Miles river for our second day of exploring a new area. The first ramp was nothing more than a beach so we headed further south on the miles river to a better public launch. In Talbot county you get a sticker for your trailer 20 bucks and your good for a year at any public launch. 5 miles down river we pulled into St Michaels. Here are some pics of the day at St Michaels.

Wow, those pictures look like postcards. Great shots Damifudo!
How was the nettle population? They can be pretty numerous this time of year.
The St. Michaels area is a special place. If you ever get a chance I highly recommend spending a half-day or so going 'round the Wye River.

Nice, might have to try over in that area sooner or later. We had a good time but didn't catch us many as i would have liked. Still had enough for 4 people for dinner.

Yeah, the season is NOT over yet for us anyway. Still time left for a little gathering. Glad you were able to get the whole family out there and have a good time.

By the way Rob, what kind of grill do you have and do you like it? I would like to get one for next season. I was talking to Stan about his Magma one a few weeks ago.

Damifudo - Great pics!! Thanks for sharing!

Blue Crabber I have a great grill for the boat and anywhere and I highly recomend it. Its called a cobb grill. Here is the link check it out. http://www.cobbamerica.com/ I have made more meals on the boat and camping with this guy. I love it plus you can get these instant light charcol wheels now at the grocery store they are pefect for a meal in it. http://www.cobbglobal.com/cobblestone.asp. The other great thing is if you pull up to a beach thats nice you can take the grill with you and cook on a beach or a picknic table. Heck you can even carry the grill lit with food cooking to the beach or the boat. Its cooks the best roast chicken you will ever stick in your mouth. No I am not selling them either they are just a great grill. I have had mine for about two years and have saved thousands in eating out cost because it is so portable. Take it to a tailgate and you will be a hit with it!

We did a trip up the wye and around the why island. I want to go back there again. It was amazing. I had a blast exploring that area.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Sunday we went to Lloyds Creek. There were two guy's running an 1200 ft trotline there and they were knocking the crabs dead. The water wasn't even as high as our knees. After eating lunch the girls (our wives) wanted to go for a cruise So I took them as far as the 6 MPH line at Georgetown. Coming back was like riding on a roller coaster. And when I hit open water into the bay it really got hairy. The wind was going one way and the swells were going the other way. I had to cut my speed down to 10 MPH. most of the way back to Stemmers run. But we made it. I'll be back to Lloyds creek again next Sunday ,Maybe enen do some crabbing. There were about 60 boats there Monday when we were there and more were coming in as we left.

Wow, that thing looks pretty cool!!! What accessories do you have to go with yours? Is there any that you would say you can't go with out? How many people do you think that you can cook for at once? Sounds like it is a 12" circle, is that right? I would love to check yours out sometime if we could hook up out on the water at some point. Thanks for the links!

Hey Lime!! Thanks for throwing your thoughts in too. Maybe I should have started a new thread ;)

Oh well. When I was hanging with Scott and Stan at Lloyds a couple of weeks ago we were talking about these. Is yours one of the magma brand ones? Stan had just piked one up that day, a round Magma with a rod holder mount.

What do you like about yours now that you have had it for a little while? Pros, cons, etc. Does it cook pretty easily for 6 people? I hear you about the steaks!

That's what I use too, Brandon. Mine is about 10 years old, runs on gas and is the 'party size'. IMO it's just the right size for 4 or 5 people. I put some gas grill brickettes in the bottom to help even out the heat. I already had rod holders on the boat, so that made it an easy decision what mount to use.
It's been VERY durable and is stable, even in a rough anchorage. It heats up quickly, cooks pretty fast, and cools down in maybe 15 minutes. About 4 years ago I bought a Sunbrella storage cover for it that matches the boat and even IT is holding up well.
My only problem is that when first lighting, it sometimes goes out within a minute or so. I just watch it for 5 minutes and then it's A-OK. The new ones have electronic ignition like a home grill but I use a butane fireplace lighter.

My first Magma was charcoal. It did the job but took way longer to heat up. The other problem with charcoal is that we always had to dump the hot coals overboard when we were done cooking. I can't recommend them for a boat.

Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Here you go a nice little video of the Cobb on a boat.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AECpyiAVgtk

I have cooked for 10 people pretty easy depends on what your cooking. One of the favorites is chicken on a stick. I have even made chocolate chip cookies on it. Pizza, smores roast chicken. I have just the basic grill and I bought a rack for to cook a rib roast on that keeps it up off the grill and roast it like chicken. You can cook potatos down inside. the kids favorite on the boat is and I dont know how to spell this casodias sp?

Here is a video of lighting the Lokkii. I get them at shoppers 2 for a 1.49 they last for 2 hrs and cook hotter than charcoal but i have used that also.

I dont really have any of the special accessories

Mine was the west marine knock off of the biggest magnum grill. I have 4 people in my family and you know the size of stan's family. We used mine to feed both are families plus when stan's brother and family rafted up with us. So that was about 13 people. Here's a pic of the inside when we first got it..
