Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

I took "Winter Dream" for a run this morning down to APG. Really hazy but not bad at all. Sky was getting a bit dark to the west so I decided not to drop the hook. Saw a crack of lightning as I came into the marina, and the rain started as I was pulling into my slip. I'm guessing a lot of people got caught in it today. At least it wasn't windy during the storm!

Same here. We were going to run out in the boat to grab some lunch. Looked nice this morning then turned ugly pretty quickly.

Rob - I guessed that we just missed you today then. My wife and I stopped by the seafood festival to check it out as it has been a couple years since we have been to it. I looked over towards your slip and noticed that your boat was gone and your truck was in the parking lot. We left just as the rain started coming down so we just missed you then too. Bummer, I would have stopped by and said hi! Glad that you were able to head out for a little bit after all the weekends away.

On another note, my wife and I went out on the boat last night and stayed overnight on the hook in Cara's cove for the night. It was a beautiful and clear night with the full moon out which almost made it to bright out to sleep. We had a great time and it was absolutely wonderful to wake up on the water. It definitely rekindled the 2 foot-itis bug in me again. Although I would love to jump up to a 28' - 30' flybridge cruiser next. Time will tell.

Hope everyone had a safe day out there as those storms crept up fast! Cant wait until next Saturday and to meet some of you guys.

Some day I will actually meet some of you guys.

Launched out of Rogue's Harbor (Turkey Point, more or less) for the first time yesterday, which was going to be my best shot to swing by Sand Island. We launched like pros, kids and wife jumped on, we even grabbed the tube and rope, we cleared the ramp area quickly, turned south and immediately we were staring down a big, ominous looking sky that came outta nowhere.

We almost went back to the ramp. I suggested we turn around, outrun the storm and take safe harbor somewhere. I figured Chesapeake Inn was as good as any place ( I can get there pretty quick!). It was great. We ate through the storm, watched soaked people come into harbor and then left when color radar showed no cells after a few songs into the band's set.

Presto... Back in the upper bay t-storms started popping up along a front. I anchored in some cove to get my bearings and check the radar on my blackberry, and it was time to go back to the ramps. We reloaded the boat and then I started covering it in a torrential downpour, with lightening and thunder and no wind -- a huge bonus. We sat in the truck with the boat safely covered and decided not to drive for 15 mins, and we watched the show at the ramp.

What was clear was that there had to be boats that could not get back to the ramps, because there was no way they could see. I am sure a few had GPS, but visibility was down to nothing for non-GPS boaters Couldn't see boats in the channel -- just couldn't see that far, so they couldn't see the launch ramps.

If I go that way again, I will try Anchor Marina. Not loving that haul down to Rogue's. Next week we're heading down to St Michael's area and launching at Kent Narrows.

Yesterday we went to pick up the boat to take it to Stemmers run but as I was taking off the cover it started to sprinkle a little and I was starting to hear some thunder. So I decided to hold off on taking the boat out yesterday.Around 12:30 as we were crossing the Bohemia river on the 213 bridge there were a lot of boats at Hacks Point and at the upper point.I saw only one boat moving.

Philster- you can get a yearly ramp permit at most bait and tackle shops in Queen Anne County, but the one closest to the marina is about 2 exits before Kent Narrows on Rt 50 east bound. I will try to get a more detailed name of the place. You can also get daily permits. Definatly get a permit- you run greater than a 50% chance of a ticket on the weekend if you dont have one- ask me how I know !! Yearly is $30 I think, daily is $5-10, not sure. The Kent Narrows ramp is a good one, deep water and spacious. If you want to overnight, Mears Point Marina is nice (my marina )- big pool and a play area for the kids, and walking distance to many restaurants.

Wye River is a nice run, and you can go entirely around the island. Watch out for jellies but I am not sure how they are at that location.

If you were to compare Sand Island and Veazy Cove for swimming and hanging out, which would you recommend ? I am coming from the Annapolis area so they are more or less about the same distance.

I would say hands down, Sand Island. I checked out Veasy cove when I looking for places to have this weekend's raftup. The beach seemed to be more rocks and logs than sand. I didn't check out the bottom, but judging by the beach I wouldn't expect a sandy bottom... Sand Island on the other hand, is pretty nice sandy beach, though not as protected if the skies get ugly. It can get a bit "mucky" as you get away from shore, but up near the beach it is a pretty nice sandy bottom...

I crossed the Bay Bridge to check out my boat at Kent Narrows- the water was pretty close to mirror smooth down here....

Interesting video. That would have been fun to watch. I actually ended up swinging into the Promendade Grill for lunch on Tuesday and the Susquehanna Hose company had a truck beside the water and were running some pumps and doing some tests as well. I wonder if they were related to each other.

Glad that you had a good time out there and were able to make up for some of the missing time from earlier this summer.

We're catching up, I think we are closing in on 20 trips out this year. Never enough for me, but maybe we'll have waterfront property sooner than later.

We're heading down to Elkview Shores later this afternoon.I have to put my front door on my ponoon boat. It had a swing open door now it will have a lift up then swing open door. Those plastic door handles don't do much in keeping the doors closed when moving. Tomorrow we'll be in the upper bay again. May go to Lloyds Creek or Cabin John. You guy's ever notice that on weekends the Elk River starts getting windy and rough around 4 pm .
